Chapter 8 - The Path to Atonement

That evening, Margaret invited Daniel to her home for the first time in nearly a year.

The front gates opened, and Daniel walked up the winding driveway on foot, carrying a small bouquet of simple wildflowers he had purchased with his own earned wages.

He entered the house carefully, wiping his shoes, treating the home not as his birthright, but as a sanctuary he had desecrated and was now allowed to enter only by grace.

They sat at the small kitchen table—not the massive dining room where Vanessa had set up her champagne towers. Margaret had cooked a simple roast with rosemary sauce.

Daniel took a bite. Tears welled up in his eyes.

"I missed this," he whispered. "Mom... back then, in the kitchen... when she insulted your food, when she told you to stay upstairs... I was such a coward. I was so consumed by my own failure that I let her walk all over you."

"You lost your way, Daniel," Margaret said gently, looking at her son. "When you let pride rule your heart, you allow toxic people to drive your life. But pride can be unlearned."

"I don't expect you to trust me again," Daniel said, setting his fork down. "I just want to pay back what I owe."

"Trust isn't given, son," Margaret replied. "It's built. Brick by brick."
