Chapter 1 - The Portrait on the Wall

The grandfather clock in the foyer chimed six times, its deep, metallic resonance echoing through the high-ceilinged mansion. Every chime felt like a countdown.

Standing in the center of the drawing room, Elena adjusted the velvet drape covering the massive six-foot frame resting on an easel. Beside her, the long mahogany dining table was impeccably set for eight: polished silver, crystal wine glasses, and fresh orchids. Everything looked pristine, peaceful, and picture-perfect.

Then, the heavy front door swung open.

Mark stepped into the foyer first, shaking off his wet umbrella. His tailored charcoal suit screamed success, but his eyes carried the nervous twitch of a man hiding a terminal lie. Behind him came his father, Arthur Sterling—the patriarch whose fortune everyone spent their lives fighting over—and Evelyn, Arthur’s second wife. Evelyn, thirty-five, stunning, and wearing a silk dress that cost more than a family car, glided inside with her usual air of supreme untouchability.

"Elena, darling!" Evelyn’s voice dripped with false affection as she walked into the living room. "You actually remembered to set the table properly this time. Arthur was just saying—"

Evelyn stopped mid-sentence.

Mark, who had just stepped through the threshold, went dead pale. His hands froze on his lapels. His breath caught in his throat with a raspy sound.

Positioned squarely in the middle of the room, illuminated by the central chandelier, was the giant high-definition canvas portrait Elena had picked up from the gallery that afternoon.

Elena slowly walked over to the velvet curtain, her red lips curving into a calm, chilling smile.

"Come on in," Elena said softly, her voice carrying across the silent room like a blade sliding from a sheath. "Tonight, everyone is going to meet the real family."

With a smooth whip of her wrist, Elena pulled the drape down.

The room gasped as if the oxygen had been sucked out instantly.

The giant portrait revealed the high-resolution photo Evelyn had texted three days prior: Evelyn, lounging on Elena’s silk sheets, her arms wrapped tightly around a half-naked Mark, holding the camera with a triumphant smile. Printed in bold, elegant script along the bottom edge was the exact caption Evelyn had sent: “Wives like you are only good for washing our sheets.”

Arthur stared at the canvas, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple. His jaw trembled. "What... what is the meaning of this?"

Mark looked like he was going to vomit right onto the Persian rug. "Elena... Elena, please... this is... this is a sick prank. Someone photoshopped—"

"Photoshop?" Elena chuckled, stepping beside the easel and tracing her finger along the crisp edge of the canvas. "Mark, you know my bed's headboard. You know that silver chain around your neck—the one I bought you for our third anniversary. And Evelyn... well, Evelyn knows the lighting in my master bedroom better than anyone, doesn't she?"

Evelyn’s composure shattered. Her arrogant posture collapsed into panicked rage. "You insane bitch! How dare you put this up in front of Arthur! Arthur, listen to me, she’s crazy! She’s trying to frame us because Mark wanted a divorce!"

"Divorce?" Elena raised a dark eyebrow. "Oh, Evelyn, we haven't even reached the appetizer yet."

Elena walked over to the side table, picked up a thick, sleek leather folder tied with a black ribbon, and held it lightly in her hand.

"You thought a crude photo was all I had?" Elena’s eyes locked onto Mark, then Evelyn. "That photo was just the invitation. The final folder in my hand... is the main course."
