Chapter 6 - Desperate Moves

Trapped inside the grand living room, Evelyn’s panic mutated into wild, erratic violence. She grabbed a heavy crystal vase from the console table and swung it wildly toward Elena.

"You ruined my life!" Evelyn shrieked.

Elena didn't even flinch. Before the vase could come close, the head of security lunged forward, grabbing Evelyn’s wrist and forcing her to drop the crystal. It shattered on the hardwood floor into a thousand sparkling pieces.

"Restrain her," Arthur ordered cold-bloodedly.

"Mark!" Evelyn screamed as the guard locked her arms behind her back. "Do something! Use the phone! Call the lawyers!"

Mark, still on his knees, looked up with hollow, defeated eyes. He looked at Elena, sitting calmly at the head of the table like a queen resting on her throne.

"Elena..." Mark whimpered, crawling toward her. "Please... we were married for five years. Remember our wedding in Amalfi? Remember how much we loved each other? Don't do this to me... I was manipulated by her! She seduced me! She threatened to tell my father about my bad investments if I didn't comply!"

Elena lowered her glass and looked down at the man she had once shared her life with.

"You blamed her for seducing you," Elena said, her voice dropping to a low tone. "But who sent the photo, Mark? You were in that bed. You were holding her. You smiled for the camera."

"She forced me—"

"No," Elena interrupted softly. "You thought I was weak. You thought because I didn't make a scene when I found women's perfume on your collars, or when you stayed out all night, that I was stupid. You thought I was a helpless wife who would accept being cheated on as long as I had a roof over my head."

She leaned forward, her eyes blazing with absolute dominance.

"You forgot who my grandfather was, Mark. You forgot where the initial capital for Sterling Enterprises came from."
