Chapter 2 - The Unraveling Front

Arthur stumbled back, pressing a heavy hand against his chest. "Mark... speak to me. Is this true?"
Mark’s knees were visibly shaking. "Father, no! She’s setting me up! She wants to destroy my position at Sterling Enterprises! She knew you were giving me the voting rights to the board tonight!"
"Voting rights?" Elena smiled softly. "Ah, yes. The board meeting tomorrow morning. The grand ascension of the prodigal son."
Evelyn lunged forward, trying to grab the black folder from Elena’s hands. "Give me that!"
Before Evelyn could touch her, Elena stepped aside with effortless grace, letting Evelyn trip over her own stilettos and crash against the edge of the dining table. Silverware clattered loudly across the floor.
"Hands to yourself, stepmother," Elena said smoothly. "You wouldn't want to ruin your manicured nails before you see what’s inside."
Arthur gripped the edge of a chair to steady himself. His eyes shifted from the giant portrait on the wall to his wife on the floor, and finally to his son, who was sweating through his bespoke shirt.
"Open the folder, Elena," Arthur commanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of heartbreak and terrifying rage. "Open it now."
"Of course, Arthur," Elena replied. "Please, take a seat. All of you. Let's have our family talk."
She unknotted the black ribbon with deliberate slowness, enjoying every micro-expression of terror on Mark’s face.
"Three months ago," Elena began, walking slowly around the room, "Mark told me he was working late every Tuesday and Thursday at the offshore holding firm in Grand Cayman. He said it was to secure the expansion deal for Sterling Enterprises."
Mark swallowed hard. "It was! The deal is real!"
"The deal was real," Elena corrected. "Until you and Evelyn changed the signatory authorities on the shell corporation behind Arthur's back."

Evelyn’s face drained of what little color she had left. "You... you don't know anything about corporate finance! You're just a housewife!"
"I was a housewife," Elena said, pulling out the first set of financial documents from the folder. "Until I realized that my husband and his stepmother weren't just sharing my bed... they were sharing my father-in-law’s bank accounts."
