Chapter 9 - Ashes and Reconstruction

The mansion was finally silent.
Broken crystal littered the hardwood floor, and the giant portrait of Evelyn and Mark still hung on the central wall—a grand monument to a fallen empire.
Arthur sat heavily in his armchair, burying his face in his weathered hands. The betrayal of his son and wife had aged him, but the realization that his life was saved gave him a quiet, profound clarity.
"Elena..." Arthur said, his voice raspy. "I don't know how to apologize to you. I brought that evil woman into this family. I raised a son who was a monster."
Elena walked over, knelt beside the old man's chair, and gently placed her hand over his.
"You didn't raise a monster, Arthur," Elena said gently. "Greed made him one. You were a victim just as much as I was."
Arthur looked at her with deep gratitude. "What happens to the company now? You hold the majority shares."
"We rebuild it," Elena said firmly. "Tomorrow morning at the board meeting, we strip Mark of all executive powers. We fire every board member who helped him hide the transfers. And then, Arthur, you can finally retire peacefully and focus on your health. I will handle the rest."

Arthur smiled weakly, tears welling in his eyes. "You were the best thing that ever happened to this family, Elena. Mark was a fool."
Elena stood up, looked around the empty, extravagant living room, and breathed in deeply. For the first time in five years, the heavy weight of deceit was completely lifted from her chest.
