Chapter 11 - Whispers in the Wind

The golden afternoon sun was just beginning to dip behind the rolling green hills of the Moretti estate in New York. The laughter of guests was still echoing across the manicured lawns, and the scent of white jasmine and dark roast Italian coffee lingered in the summer air. Emma sat on the edge of the stone fountain in the private courtyard, her ivory lace gown cascading around her like soft waves. Her hand rested gently over the delicate pendant Gabriel had just placed around her neck—the olive branch entwined with a dove.

Beside her, the triplets—Leo, Lucas, and Liam—were fast asleep on a cushioned outdoor lounge chair, exhausted from an afternoon of running through the gardens and devouring half a chocolate wedding cake. Their tiny faces were still smudged with frosting, their silver bowties slightly crooked.

Gabriel stepped out from the french doors, holding two crystal flutes of sparkling prosecco. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, rolling up the sleeves of his crisp white shirt to reveal his muscular forearms and the dark, intricate tattoos that told the story of his past struggles. He walked toward Emma with a soft, rare smile that was reserved only for her and their boys.

"They're completely out," Gabriel said softly, handing her a glass and motioning toward the sleeping triplets. "Matteo tried to carry Lucas inside, but he mumbled something about guarding the rope and fell back asleep."

Emma laughed softly, the sound like clear water. "They've been planning that tug-of-war for three weeks, Gabriel. You can't blame them."

Gabriel sat beside her on the cool stone edge of the fountain, wrapping one strong arm around her waist and pulling her close to his side. He kissed her temple, breathing in the scent of jasmine from her hair. "Are you happy, my love?"

"Happy doesn't even cover it," Emma murmured, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart. "For the first time in my life, I feel completely safe. I feel like we can finally breathe."

For months, the shadows of the past had haunted them. The lingering remnants of the rival Syndicate, the legal threats, and the painful memories of Isabella’s tragic passing had weighed heavily on Gabriel’s shoulders. But today, standing before their closest friends and family, making vows that bound their souls together, the darkness seemed to have dissolved into the bright summer light.

However, in Gabriel's world, peace was a fragile glass sculpture.

A shadow fell over the courtyard pavement. Matteo stepped into the garden, his tall, imposing frame blocking the warm light of the setting sun. Matteo was not just Gabriel’s chief lieutenant; he was a brother in all but blood, a man whose loyalty to the Moretti family had been proven in gunfire and blood. But right now, Matteo’s face was devoid of its usual jovial wedding expression. His jaw was set tight, and his dark eyes burned with intense concern.

Gabriel felt the sudden shift in the air instantly. He didn't move away from Emma, but his body subtly tense, the instincts of Don Moretti reawakening in a split second.

"Matteo," Gabriel said calmly, keeping his voice low so as not to wake the children. "What is it?"

Matteo hesitated, glancing at Emma with a look of deep regret. "Forgive me, Don Gabriel... Mrs. Moretti. I wouldn't interrupt this day if it weren't urgent."

"Speak, Matteo," Emma said gently, taking Gabriel's hand in hers. "We're in this together. No secrets."

Matteo took a step closer, pulling an encrypted leather folder from inside his jacket. "The federal courier just delivered a sealed dossier to the gate. It's from Attorney General Vance’s office in Washington."

Gabriel frowned, his dark brows knitting together. "Vance? We finalized the cooperation agreement three months ago. All Moretti commercial assets were cleared of federal liens, and the Syndicate’s shell companies were liquidated."

"It's not about the commercial assets, Gabriel," Matteo said softly, leaning in. "It's about the Sicilian Interpol warrant. Someone in Palermo just petitioned the international court to unseal the private estate records of your late father, Don Carmine Moretti."

Emma looked between the two men, sensing the sudden spike in danger. "Why would someone unseal Carmine's records now? He's been gone for nearly a decade."

Matteo opened the folder, revealing a single black-and-white surveillance photograph taken at the Palermo International Airport three days ago. The photo showed a tall, elegant woman in her late fifties, wearing a dark silk coat, oversized sunglasses, and surrounded by four heavily armed private security guards.

Gabriel’s breath hitched in his chest. His fingers tightened around Emma's hand so hard it made her ring press against her skin.

"It can't be," Gabriel whispered, his voice dropping into a register of cold, terrifying disbelief.

"Who is she, Gabriel?" Emma asked, looking at the photo.

Gabriel stared at the image, his face turning pale beneath his sun-bronzed skin. "That is Contessa Sofia Rosselini... my father’s former business partner in Europe. And the woman who betrayed my family to the Syndicate twenty years ago."
