Chapter 12 - The Ghost of Palermo

The atmosphere inside the Moretti estate shifted rapidly from a celebratory wedding reception to a high-alert command center.

By midnight, the wedding guests had departed, leaving only the inner circle. The triplets were sound asleep in their second-floor nursery, guarded by two of Gabriel’s most trusted security men stationed outside their doors. Downstairs, in Gabriel’s private mahogany-paneled study, the air was thick with the scent of dark espresso, burning cigars, and underlying tension.

Gabriel stood before the grand fireplace, staring at the cold ashes. He had changed out of his tuxedo into a dark cashmere sweater and trousers, his hands tucked deep into his pockets. Standing around the large oak desk were Matteo, David Chen—the family’s brilliant chief legal strategist—and Emma, who refused to go to sleep while her family was under threat.

"Sofia Rosselini was supposed to be serving a life sentence in a high-security prison in Calabria," David Chen explained, adjusting his glasses as he analyzed the documents spread across the desk. "According to these official court filings, she was granted an emergency medical release six weeks ago by a corrupt Sicilian magistrate who has since vanished."

"Medical release?" Matteo sneered, slamming his fist onto the desk. "She looks as healthy as a horse in those airport photos! She bribed her way out, David!"

"Of course she did," Gabriel said coldly, turning around to face them. His eyes were dark, calculating, and filled with a cold rage that made even the air in the room feel heavy. "Sofia doesn't care about legal releases. She waited until the federal investigation into our family was officially closed. She waited until she knew our security guards were relaxed for the wedding. She wants the Moretti bloodline wiped out."

Emma stepped forward, standing right beside Gabriel. "Why now, Gabriel? What does she gain from coming back after all these years?"

Gabriel looked at Emma, his expression softening slightly as he looked into her hazel eyes. "Twenty years ago, before my father died, he divided the family’s true foundation—not the money, not the real estate, but the master encrypted registry that contains the evidence of every corrupt politician, judge, and syndicate boss in Europe and North America. He split the cryptographic key into two parts."

"The double seal," Matteo whispered, realization dawning on his face.

"Yes," Gabriel nodded. "My father gave one half of the key to my late wife, Isabella's family, which was passed down to me. The other half was hidden inside a physical artifact—a private family heirloom that was thought to be lost when my father’s villa in Palermo was bombed."

Emma’s hand instinctively reached up to touch the gold pendant resting against her collarbone—the olive branch entwined with a dove.

David Chen caught the movement and gasped softly. "Emma... the pendant."

Gabriel looked at Emma’s neck, his dark eyes widening slightly. "Isabella gave that pendant to you, Emma. But Isabella got it from my father’s private vault in Rome before the villa was destroyed."

Emma took the delicate pendant off her neck and placed it gently in the center of the oak desk under the bright desk lamp. Upon closer inspection under a magnifying glass held by David Chen, they saw an extraordinarily tiny, microscopic keyhole carved into the base of the olive branch.

"It’s not just a wedding gift," Emma said softly, horror and awe mixing in her voice. "It’s the second half of Carmine’s master key."

"And Sofia Rosselini knows it," Matteo growled, reaching for his sidearm tucked in his shoulder holster. "She didn't come to New York to fight a war. She came to steal that pendant."

Before anyone could say another word, the emergency comms unit on Gabriel’s desk lit up with a flashing red light. A sharp, panicked voice came through the speaker.

"Don Gabriel! This is Gate Three! We have unidentified vehicles approaching the perimeter fence from the north woods! They’ve disabled the optical sensors!"

A heavy explosion shook the ground beneath their feet, making the crystal chandelier above the desk rattle violently.
