Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Glass Mansion

The rain grew heavier, driving the family inside the grand estate. While Emma escorted the triplets upstairs to give them a warm bath, Gabriel stood in his private study, his expression transformed once more into hardened steel.
Matteo, his childhood friend and second-in-command of the Moretti syndicate, stood across from the heavy oak desk, holding a encrypted tablet.
"We swept the perimeter, Boss," Matteo said grimly. "The photographer cleared out the moment the guards moved toward the west gate. But we managed to intercept the signal. The photos were being transmitted to an IP address registered in Chicago."
Gabriel’s jaw locked. "The Falcone family."
"Yes," Matteo confirmed. "Ever since Isabella passed, Don Falcone has been testing our borders. He thinks you've grown soft, Gabriel. He thinks the grief rendered you vulnerable. If he sees these photos—if he realizes you have a new weakness in the house..." Matteo hesitated, casting a glance toward the grand staircase outside the office door.
"Emma is not a weakness," Gabriel snapped, though the sudden intensity of his own reaction surprised him. He smoothed the lapels of his suit. "She is a civilian. An employee."
"She’s a civilian who got you to kneel in the mud, Gabriel," Matteo countered gently. "I haven't seen you touch your sons like that in nearly a year. The staff is talking. The guards saw it. And if Falcone's spies saw it, Emma Brooks just became the biggest target in New York."
Gabriel turned to face the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the stormy garden. His mind raced. When Isabella died in a tragic 'car accident' eleven months ago, Gabriel had suspected foul play, but without hard evidence, he had been forced to maintain a fragile peace with the rival crime families to protect his sons. He had turned his home into an impenetrable fortress and turned himself into a ghost.
Now, a curvy, fierce kindergarten teacher with no concept of the mob had waltzed into his fortress and blown the doors off his grief.
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.
Emma stepped into the study, holding a tray with two warm mugs of chamomile tea. She had changed into a soft, oversized sweater and simple jeans, her hair falling in gentle waves over her shoulders. Without the mud and rain, her warm skin and full, breathtaking curves were strikingly evident.
"The boys are sound asleep," Emma said softly, setting the tray on the desk. "I... I brought you some tea. You looked like you could use it."
Matteo gave a subtle nod to Gabriel and quietly exited the room, closing the heavy doors behind him.
"Thank you, Miss Brooks," Gabriel said, his tone measured.
"Emma," she corrected gently, stepping closer. "Please. Call me Emma."
Gabriel looked down at her. Standing this close, he could smell her scent—a sweet mixture of lavender, vanilla, and fresh rain. It was intoxicating, a stark contrast to the sterile, expensive scents of the corporate world he inhabited.
"Emma," Gabriel tested her name on his tongue, his deep voice carrying a gravelly warmth that made her skin tingle. "I owe you an apology. My reaction on the lawn was harsh."
"You were protecting your home," Emma replied, meeting his dark eyes. "I understand what it’s like to lose someone and feel like you have to build walls to keep what's left safe. I lost my mother when I was sixteen. My father shut down completely. He stopped looking at me because I reminded him too much of her." She offered a sad, delicate smile. "I didn't want that to happen to Leo, Lucas, and Liam."
Gabriel felt a jolt in his chest. She understood him better in four months than most of his associates had in four decades.
"You are very perceptive, Emma," Gabriel said softly, taking a step toward her. "And very brave. But bravery in this house can be a dangerous thing."
"Are you threatening me, Mr. Moretti?" she teased gently, though her heart pounded against her ribs.
"No," Gabriel said, his face growing deathly serious as he closed the remaining distance, stopping inches from her. "I am telling you that my life is surrounded by shadows. Shadows that seek to destroy anything good that enters my world."
He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. Emma gasped at the heat of his touch, her breath catching in her throat.

"I brought you here to care for my sons," Gabriel whispered, his dark eyes locking onto her lips. "I did not expect you to save them. Or to haunt me."
Before Emma could process the intense electricity crackling between them, the mansion’s alarm system suddenly blared, red lights flashing wildly across the ceiling as the heavy steel blast shutters slammed shut over the windows.
