Chapter 4 - The Safehouse in the Mist

By 4:00 AM, two armored SUVs glided through the iron gates of the Moretti coastal estate in the Hamptons. Perched on a dramatic cliff overlooking the crashing Atlantic Ocean, the estate was an impenetrable fortress hidden beneath a fog-shrouded peninsula.
The triplets, exhausted from the chaotic middle-of-the-night transfer, were tucked safely into a warm, spacious bedroom on the second floor. Emma sat on the edge of the plush bed, gently stroking Lucas’s soft hair until his rhythmic breathing signaled he was deeply asleep.
She stood up quietly, slipping out into the dimly lit hallway. Her mind was a whirlpool of emotions. In less than twelve hours, her quiet life as a nanny had been shattered into pieces of gunfire, mafia rivalries, and an undeniable, terrifying attraction to the most dangerous man in New York.
She walked down the spiral staircase, guided by the soft glow of a fireplace in the main salon.
Gabriel sat in a leather armchair before the hearth, his dark suit jacket discarded, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar and sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He held a glass of amber scotch, staring into the flames.
"They are sleeping," Emma said softly, stepping onto the hardwood floor.
Gabriel looked up. The firelight carved harsh, beautiful shadows across his aristocratic features. "Thank you, Emma."
She walked over, sitting on the edge of the leather sofa opposite him. "Are we safe here?"
"For now," Gabriel said, taking a slow sip of his drink. "This estate isn't registered under the Moretti name. Falcone doesn't know it exists. My security detail has locked down the roads for five miles." He paused, looking at her intently. "You should be terrified. Most people would have demanded a fortune and fled the state by now."
Emma looked down at her hands. "I was terrified. But when I saw you on those stairs... when I saw how you fought to keep us safe... I realized something."
"What?"
"You act like a monster so the real monsters can't touch the people you love," Emma said softly, meeting his dark gaze. "You carry all this darkness on your shoulders so your boys can live in the light."
Gabriel went still. He set his glass down on the side table, the amber liquid swirling gently. Slowly, he stood up and walked toward her. The raw, powerful energy he radiated made Emma’s breath catch in her throat.
He stopped right in front of her, leaning down until his dark eyes were level with hers.
"You see too much, Emma Brooks," Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with unexpressed desire. "You enter my life, break every rule in my household, turn my sons against my authority, and then look at me like I am a savior."
"Maybe you are," Emma breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs. She didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned in just a fraction, drawn to him like a moth to a flame.
Gabriel’s eyes darkened with raw passion. He reached down, catching her chin gently between his thumb and forefinger, lifting her face.
"I am no savior, Emma," Gabriel growled softly. "I am a ruthless man who is losing his mind trying not to touch you."
May you like
"Then stop trying," Emma whispered.
Gabriel let out a low, rough sound, his iron control finally snapping. He closed the distance, pressing his lips against hers in a fierce, possessive kiss that consumed them both.
