Chapter 5 - The Sacred Promise

The kiss tasted of dark scotch, rain, and months of denied craving. Gabriel pulled Emma up off the sofa, drawing her voluptuous body tight against his hard frame. Emma gasped into his mouth, her fingers tangling into his thick, dark hair as she pulled him closer, yielding completely to the fire burning between them.
Gabriel’s hands mapped the soft, generous curves of her waist and hips, his touch reverent yet possessive. He had known many women in his life, but none had ever felt like this—none had ever set his soul on fire while simultaneously bringing peace to his chaotic mind.
He broke the kiss reluctantly, resting his forehead against hers, both of them breathing heavily.
"Emma..." Gabriel breathed, his hands resting gently on her hips. "If I take this further, there is no turning back. You become mine. In every sense of the word."
Emma looked into his dark eyes, seeing no hesitation, only deep, fierce devotion. "I’ve been yours since the moment you looked at me on that lawn, Gabriel."
Before Gabriel could answer, a loud chime echoed from his satellite terminal on the desk.
Gabriel stiffened, his protective instincts instantly re-engaging. He stepped back, giving Emma a look of regret, before walking over to answer the secure line.
"Speak, Matteo," Gabriel commanded.
"Gabriel, you need to see this," Matteo’s voice came through, filled with urgency. "We decrypted the remaining files from the satellite phone we took from Falcone's lead shooter. It wasn't just hit orders, Gabriel. It contained video files recorded eleven months ago."
Gabriel’s body went rigid. "What video files?"
"It’s... it’s Isabella, Gabriel," Matteo said, his voice dropping to a somber whisper. "It was recorded three days before her accident."
Gabriel’s face went deadly pale. "Play it."
"I’m patching the feed through to your terminal now."
Gabriel clicked a button on the monitor. Emma stepped closer, standing beside him as a grainy video window opened on the screen.
In the video, a frail, beautiful woman with pale skin and dark eyes sat in a hospital armchair, wrapped in a knitted blanket. It was Isabella Moretti.
"Gabriel, my love," Isabella’s soft, Italian-accented voice filled the quiet room. "If you are watching this, it means Don Falcone’s threats have finally reached fruition, and I am no longer with you."
Gabriel gripped the edge of the desk so hard the dark wood groaned under his force.
"Do not seek vengeance, my husband," Isabella continued, tears shining in her eyes. "Falcone tried to blackmail me to turn against your family, but I refused. I know my time is short. But I am making one final promise to you now... a promise that the darkness will not win."
Isabella looked directly into the camera, a beautiful, gentle smile lighting up her frail face.
"I have left something for you in the family vault in Florence. A key, and a diary. In it, you will find the truth about Falcone's network. But more importantly, Gabriel... promise me you will let love back into your heart. Promise me that when the right woman comes—a woman who loves our boys as her own—you will not let your guilt keep you from her."
The video flickered and went black.
Silence descended upon the room like a heavy velvet curtain.
Gabriel stared at the black screen, his chest heaving, tears finally brimming in his dark eyes—tears he had held back for nearly a year.
Emma felt her heart break for the man beside her. Without a word, she reached out, wrapping her arms around Gabriel’s broad waist from behind, pressing her cheek against his back.
Gabriel turned around, pulling Emma tightly into his arms, burying his face into the warm crook of her neck.

"She knew," Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "She knew Falcone was coming for her, and she sacrificed herself to keep the evidence safe."
Emma held him tight, feeling the massive, powerful king of New York weep silently in her arms. Isabella hadn't just left a promise—she had laid down the path for Gabriel’s redemption. And that path led straight to Emma.
