Chapter 13 - The Breach at Midnight

The sound of shattering glass and the distant blare of high-decibel security alarms echoed through the grand hallways of the Moretti estate.

Gabriel reacted instantly. He pulled a concealed 9mm handgun from a drawer under his desk, checking the chamber in one smooth, practiced motion. "Matteo! Secure the nursery! Do not let anyone near the boys!"

"On it!" Matteo barked, drawing his weapon and sprinting out of the study toward the grand staircase.

"David! Get into the safe room and stay on the direct line to Detective Mendez and the state police!" Gabriel ordered. "Emma, you’re coming with me."

"I'm not leaving you, Gabriel!" Emma said fiercely, her eyes shining with absolute resolve.

Gabriel grabbed her hand, pulling her toward a hidden panel behind the mahogany bookshelf. "I know you aren't, my love. But we have to get to the boys first."

The house was illuminated by flashing red emergency strobe lights. Outside, through the grand floor-to-ceiling windows of the hallway, they could see dark figures dressed in tactical gear moving through the manicured rose gardens, armed with suppressed automatic rifles. They weren't ordinary thugs; these were highly trained European mercenaries hired by Sofia Rosselini.

As Gabriel and Emma reached the second-floor landing, two masked mercenaries burst through the stained-glass window at the end of the hall, their weapons raised.

"Down!" Gabriel roared, pulling Emma behind a heavy marble pillar as a hail of bullets ripped through the antique wallpaper, sending plaster dust filling the air.

Gabriel leaned out from behind the pillar, firing three precise shots. The first mercenary collapsed instantly, his rifle clattering against the hardwood floor. The second mercenary ducked into an alcove, returning fire.

Emma looked around frantically for anything to use as a distraction. She spotted a heavy bronze bust of Don Carmine resting on a pedestal near the landing. Without hesitating, she grabbed the heavy statue, leaned out from behind the pillar, and threw it with all her strength down the hallway.

The heavy bronze hit the wooden floorboards with a deafening crash, making the mercenary turn his head toward the sound for a split second.

That split second was all Gabriel needed. He stepped out from cover and fired two shots directly into the mercenary's chest, neutralizing the threat.

"Nice throw," Gabriel said, offering her a quick, fierce grin through the smoke and dust.

"I told you I was in this with you," Emma replied, her heart pounding against her ribs as she grabbed Gabriel’s arm.

They sprinted down the hallway to the nursery suite. Matteo was already standing outside the door, standing over two downed mercenaries, his face smeared with soot and blood, but holding the line with absolute ferocity.

Inside the nursery, the triplets were awake, huddled together in the center of the large plush rug under a heavy blanket. Leo was holding a wooden toy sword, his little chest heaving, trying to look brave for his younger brothers.

"Daddy! Emma!" Leo cried out as the doors swung open.

Emma rushed across the room, dropping to her knees and gathering all three boys into a fierce, protective embrace. "It's okay, my babies! It's okay! We're here! Daddy is here!"

Gabriel stood at the doorway, his weapon lowered but ready, looking at his wife and sons. A profound, unstoppable wave of protective rage washed over him. Sofia Rosselini had crossed the ultimate line. She had brought war into his home, into his children’s sanctuary.

"Matteo," Gabriel said softly, his voice colder than ice. "Are the tunnels clear?"

"Yes, Don Gabriel," Matteo replied, wiping blood from his cheek. "The subterranean route leads directly to the boathouse on the lake. The armored SUV is waiting."

"Take Emma and the boys to the safehouse in the Adirondacks," Gabriel commanded.

Emma stood up instantly, her eyes wide with alarm. "No! Gabriel, what are you going to do?"

Gabriel walked over to her, taking her face in his warm, strong hands, kissing her lips with fierce tenderness. "I'm going to end this, Emma. I let Sofia live twenty years ago because I thought she was powerless. I will not let her hunt our children for the rest of their lives."

"Gabriel, please—" Emma pleaded, tears welling in her eyes.

"Trust me, Emma," Gabriel whispered, looking deep into her soul. "I promised you a life without shadows. I intend to keep that promise. Take the pendant, go with Matteo, and wait for my call."
