Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mirror

The penthouse office overlooking the glowing skyline of Bern hung in absolute, suffocating silence.

The giant wall display illuminated the room in stark blue light. The genetic report was displayed in high-definition clarity:

GENOMIC MATCH CONFIRMED: 99.99%

MATERNAL RELATIONSHIP: EVELYN HART

PATERNAL RELATIONSHIP: VICTOR HALE

Julian Mercer’s fingers hovered above his mechanical keyboard as if touching it again might trigger an explosion. He slowly backed away from the glass desk.

"Victor..." Julian’s voice was barely a whisper. "Isabelle’s preserved embryos... they were never used."

Victor stood frozen. His six-foot-two frame, usually an anchor of calm authority in billion-dollar boardrooms, seemed to vibrate with a sudden, violent tension. He stared at the blue letters on the screen.

"What did you say?" Victor asked, his voice dropping into a register that made the room temperature feel as though it had dropped by ten degrees.

"The late Clara Hale didn't just procure a surrogate," Julian said, his eyes scanning the decrypted sub-files rapidly. "She instructed Dr. Anton Keller to destroy Isabelle’s preserved genetic material three years ago, claiming it was compromised by chemotherapy drugs. Then... she selected Evelyn Hart from her charitable foundation's fertility roster. She used Evelyn's own egg and fertilized it with your preserved sample."

Evelyn dropped back down onto the cream sofa, clutching little Sophie against her chest so tightly the child let out a soft, whimpering sigh in her sleep.

"I wasn't a surrogate," Evelyn breathed, tears falling onto Sophie’s golden curls. "I was... a donor? A mother... without my knowledge?"

"You weren't a donor," Victor turned slowly, his gray-blue eyes dark with a mixture of profound shock and rising fury. "You were target practice for a monster. My mother didn't want a child from a deceased woman. She wanted a child born of a living, healthy mother whom she could erase the moment the baby breathed."

"Why?" Evelyn cried out, her voice breaking through the polished quiet of the penthouse. "Why would Clara Hale do that to me?! I trusted her foundation! I thought she was saving my life after my miscarriages!"

Julian pulled up an archived audio recording dated two years ago—an encrypted voice note recovered from Clara Hale’s private estate servers. He hit play.

The sharp, elegant, cold voice of Clara Hale filled the room:

"Isabelle was weak, Anton. Her bloodline was tainted with illness. I will not have my grandson—or my granddaughter—carrying the ghost of a cancer patient. Find a woman with flawless genetics, rural roots, and no family to fight back. Evelyn Hart is perfect. Let her bear the child, tell her it died, and bring my son his rightful heir. Victor will believe it is Isabelle's child, and he will never look back."

The recording clicked off.

Evelyn covered her mouth with a shaking hand, her chest heaving as silent sobs wracked her body. "She treated me like an incubator... a vessel to be discarded."

Victor walked toward the window. Below them, Bern looked like a grid of golden circuit boards under the rain-slick night. He raised his hand and brought his heavy signet ring down onto the reinforced glass desk.

CRACK.

A fine spiderweb of fractured glass bloomed beneath his fist. Blood welled along his knuckles, but he didn't flinch.

"Julian," Victor commanded, his voice unnervingly quiet.

"Yes, Victor?"

"Dr. Anton Keller. Where is he?"

"He retired eighteen months ago, right after your mother's death. He lives in a private villa in Lausanne."

"Bring him to me," Victor ordered. "Don't involve the police. Don't call his lawyers. Have my private security team haul him out of his bed and bring him to the estate by midnight."

"Victor, that’s kidnapping—" Julian began nervously.

"He stole my daughter from her mother’s arms!" Victor roared, the sound echoing off the glass walls. "He forged death certificates! He committed human trafficking under my family's name! Bring him here, Julian, or I will go to Lausanne myself and tear that villa apart with my bare hands!"
