Chapter 3 - The Confession

The basement level of the Hale Estate was not a dungeon, but a high-tech subterranean security facility with concrete walls, steel doors, and stark fluorescent lighting.
Dr. Anton Keller sat in a metal chair in the center of a secure holding room. He was a man in his late sixties, with thinning gray hair, expensive gold-rimmed glasses, and a silk robe thrown over his pyjamas. He was trembling violently, looking terrified as two broad-shouldered security officers stood silently by the door.
The heavy steel door slid open. Victor Hale walked into the room, followed by Evelyn and Julian.
When Keller saw Victor, he gasped, trying to stand. "Victor! What is the meaning of this?! Your men broke into my home! I am a respected physician! I will have you—"
Keller stopped dead. His eyes had landed on Evelyn Hart.
The gold-rimmed glasses slipped slightly down his nose. The color drained from his face until he looked like paper.
"Miss... Hart," Keller stuttered, his voice shrinking into a squeak.
Evelyn walked forward until she stood three feet from the man who had ruined her life. Her trembling stopped, replaced by a cold, burning righteousness.
"You told me she didn't breathe, Dr. Keller," Evelyn said, her voice shaking with quiet fury. "You told me her lungs failed. You held my hand while I was heavily sedated and told me to let her go."
"Evelyn... listen to me..." Keller stammered, sweating profusely. "It was... medical complications... I was trying to protect—"
BANG.
Victor slammed his uninjured hand onto the metal table beside Keller. The force of the strike rattled the chair.
"Do not lie to her!" Victor shouted, stepping into Keller’s space, towering over the old doctor like an impending storm. "We have the decrypted files from Saint Aurelia, Anton! We have my mother’s voice notes! We have the bank transfers from the shell accounts!"
Keller slumped into his chair, his shoulders collapsing. He buried his face in his trembling hands. "Clara... Clara threatened me..."
"My mother is dead!" Victor snarled. "You can't hide behind a corpse! Tell us everything! Every single detail, or you will leave this room in handcuffs and spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security prison!"
Keller sobbed, wiping his face with his sleeve. "Clara came to me three years ago. She knew Isabelle’s embryos were stored at my clinic. She paid me half a million Euros to destroy them. She said Isabelle was from an inferior bloodline, that she was sickly, and that she wanted Victor to have a child from a pure, healthy woman."
Evelyn gripped the edge of the table. "And me? Why me?"
"You came to our charitable fertility clinic," Keller whimpered, looking up at her with terrified eyes. "You were young, perfectly healthy, blood type O-negative, no genetic illness in your family history. Clara reviewed your files personally. She said you were the perfect vessel."
"You fertilized my egg without my consent?" Evelyn whispered, horrified.
"Yes," Keller admitted, weeping. "We used Victor's sample. When you gave birth, Clara instructed me to administer a heavy sedative. We took the baby immediately. I filled out a false death report for you, and a false surrogacy delivery report for Victor. Clara paid me another million Euros once the child was delivered to the Hale Estate."
"Where is the money now?" Julian asked, recording every word on his tablet.
"In an offshore account in Liechtenstein," Keller squeaked. "Take it! Take all of it! Just don't destroy me, Victor! I was only following Clara’s orders!"
Victor looked down at the pathetic old man with pure disgust. He turned to Julian.
"Call the Swiss Federal Prosecutor," Victor said coldly. "Hand over the recordings, the bank ledgers, and Dr. Keller’s confession. Have him arrested for kidnapping, forgery, and human trafficking."
"No! Victor, please!" Keller screamed as the security guards grabbed his arms, lifting him from the chair. "Your family's reputation will be ruined! The press will tear the Hale name to pieces!"

Victor turned his back on Keller, looking at Evelyn.
"The Hale name was built on a lie," Victor said softly. "Let it burn."
