Chapter 2 - The Fortress of Glass

By 11:30 PM, a convoy of three black armored SUVs pulled through the massive wrought-iron gates of the Hale Estate on the outskirts of Lake Geneva.
The estate was a sprawling compound of modern glass architecture, ancient pine trees, and steel security perimeters. It was built like a fortress, designed to keep the world out.
Inside the rear seat of the lead SUV, Evelyn sat holding Sophie. The child had refused to be separated from her, her tiny hands locked around the hem of Evelyn’s waitress apron. Sophie’s feverish cheeks had cooled, and her breathing was soft, but she woke up every few minutes, crying out "Mommy" until she felt Evelyn’s hand on her back.
Victor opened the car door himself. He reached out a hand to help Evelyn down, but she hesitated, eyeing his bloody knuckles and the dark, imposing silhouette of the mansion.
"You're safe here, Evelyn," Victor said softly, his voice stripped of the rage he had displayed in the office. "I give you my word as a man. No one will touch you or take her from you in this house."
Evelyn looked into his gray-blue eyes. Despite the terrifying power he wielded, she saw a father whose world had been pulverized into dust. She took his hand and stepped down onto the wet driveway.
They walked into the grand foyer. Soaring ceilings, warm timber beams, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the dark waters of Lake Geneva gave the house a breathtaking, yet lonely, majesty.
A middle-aged woman in a crisp housekeeper's uniform hurried forward, her eyes wide with shock as she saw the waitress holding little Sophie.
"Mr. Hale! You're back. Is Sophie alright? We were worried when—"
"Mrs. Gable," Victor cut in gently. "Prepare the primary guest suite on the second floor. Ensure it has an adjoining door to Sophie’s room. Bring warm food, fresh clothes for Miss Hart, and a medical kit."
"Miss... Hart?" Mrs. Gable blinked, looking at Evelyn’s stained uniform and wet hair.
"She is Sophie’s mother," Victor stated clearly.
Mrs. Gable gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, but she didn't ask questions. She bowed her head instantly. "Right away, sir. Right away."
Ten minutes later, Evelyn was sitting on a plush velvet armchair in a magnificent bedroom overlooking the lake. Sophie was tucked into a massive king-sized bed, fast asleep under silk sheets, holding her worn burgundy rabbit.
Evelyn had washed the grime from her face and changed into a soft cashmere sweater provided by the staff. She sat beside the bed, staring at Sophie’s sleeping face—the long eyelashes, the delicate nose, and the small crescent-shaped scar beneath her left ear.
A soft knock sounded at the door. Victor stepped inside, holding two mugs of steaming tea. He had cleaned his hand, a white bandage wrapped neatly around his knuckles.
He set a mug on the nightstand beside her and sat down in the armchair opposite her.
"How is she?" Victor asked quietly.
"She’s sleeping," Evelyn whispered, her gaze never leaving her daughter. "Two years... I spent two years visiting a small grave in Bern. I bought flowers every month. I sat by a stone with no body underneath it, thinking I was a failure because my body couldn't keep her alive."
Victor swallowed hard, a muscle jaw twitching in his cheek. "I am sorry, Evelyn. I know words mean nothing against two years of stolen time, but... I didn't know."
"I know you didn't," Evelyn looked up at him, her hazel eyes swimming with tears. "I saw your face in the restaurant. A man who bought a child doesn't look at her with that kind of heartbreak."
"I loved her from the second Keller placed her in my arms," Victor confessed, his voice rough. "My mother told me the surrogate had relinquished her rights and vanished to South America. I raised Sophie believing she was all I had left of Isabelle. But Sophie never spoke. She never smiled. Doctors told me it was developmental delay or trauma. Now I realize..."
He looked at Sophie. "...She was waiting for her mother."

Before Evelyn could answer, the door handle turned. Julian Mercer stepped into the room, his face pale.
"Victor," Julian said softly. "Security just arrived at the lower garage. They have Dr. Keller."
