Chapter 5 - The War for Hale International

At 8:00 AM the following morning, the storm arrived—not from the clouds, but from the financial world.

News of Dr. Anton Keller’s arrest broke across European news outlets. While the specific details regarding Sophie’s parentage were kept hidden under a strict child-protection court injunction, rumors flooded Zurich and Bern that the Hale family was tied to an ongoing federal investigation involving the late Clara Hale's foundation.

By 10:00 AM, Hale International stock fell twelve percent.

The emergency board meeting was called for 1:00 PM at the corporate headquarters in downtown Bern.

Inside the master suite at the estate, Evelyn was helping Sophie put on a soft blue wool dress. The little girl was bright-eyed, her golden curls brushed neatly, giggling as she played with a silver bell on the dress.

"Mommy!" Sophie chirped, holding up a wooden toy horse. "Look! Horse!"

Evelyn smiled, her heart leaping every single time the child spoke. "It’s a very fast horse, sweetie."

The door opened, and Victor walked in, impeccably dressed in a dark charcoal three-piece suit, his silk tie immaculate. Yet, his face was set in lines of hard determination.

"The board wants my resignation," Victor said bluntly, walking over to them.

Evelyn stood up. "Because of your mother's foundation?"

"Because my uncle, Richard Hale, sees an opportunity," Victor explained, his eyes cold. "Richard has wanted control of Hale International for a decade. He’s telling the board that Clara’s scandal makes me unfit to lead, and that my sudden focus on a 'private family matter' is compromising the company."

"Richard?" Evelyn asked. "Was he involved in what happened at Saint Aurelia?"

"Julian is checking his financial records now," Victor replied. "If Richard knew what my mother was doing and helped cover it up to use it as leverage later... he is as guilty as Keller."

Sophie reached out, grabbing Victor's thumb with her tiny hand. "Daddy come?"

Victor dropped to his knee instantly, his expression softening as he kissed her small forehead. "Daddy has to go to work for a little while, my sweet girl. But I'll be back soon."

He stood up, looking at Evelyn. "I have security stationed every ten feet around this compound. You and Sophie are completely safe here."

"Victor," Evelyn took his hand, looking into his eyes. "Don't let them take what you built. Fight them."

Victor smiled—a fierce, sharp smile that showed why he was feared across the continent. "I don't intend to lose, Evelyn."
