Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

By 4:00 AM, the estate was quiet again.
Federal agents had quietly removed Dr. Keller through the underground garage, securing the physical files from his villa under a court seal.
Victor sat in his private library on the ground floor, staring into the dying embers of the fireplace. A glass of amber scotch sat untouched on the mahogany side table beside him.
The door creaked open. Evelyn stepped inside, wrapped in a soft wool cardigan over her clothes. She looked exhausted, dark circles beneath her eyes, but her posture was no longer fragile.
"Is Sophie sleeping?" Victor asked, without turning his head.
"She is," Evelyn said softly, walking over to stand near the fire. "She held my thumb the whole time. I think she’s afraid that if she lets go, she’ll wake up back in that restaurant."
Victor picked up his glass, swirling the amber liquid. "You can hate my family, Evelyn. You have every right to burn this house to the ground."
"I don't hate you, Victor," Evelyn said, looking at his profile illuminated by the orange firelight. "I hated Clara Hale. I hated Keller. But you... you were just another victim of a woman who thought she could play God with people's lives."
Victor let out a dry, bitter laugh. "I built an empire across Europe. I negotiated treaties, defeated corporate takeovers, managed thousands of employees... and I couldn't even see that my own mother had stolen a child for me."
"She was your mother," Evelyn reasoned gently, taking a step closer to him. "We trust the people who raise us. You wanted to believe your daughter came from the woman you loved. That doesn't make you weak, Victor. It makes you human."
Victor looked up at her. His gray-blue eyes, usually so calculating and cold, were wide and vulnerable.
"What happens now, Evelyn?" Victor asked, his voice rough. "Tomorrow, the news will break. Keller’s arrest can't be hidden forever. The board of Hale International will panic. The press will swarm this gate."
"I don't care about the press, Victor," Evelyn said firmly. "I don't care about your board, your stocks, or your foundation. All I care about is that little girl upstairs."
"She is your daughter," Victor said, his voice tightening with suppressed agony. "Legally, biologically, morally... she is yours. If you take her and leave... I won't stop you. I won't use my lawyers against you. I won't do to you what my mother did."
Evelyn stared at him. She saw the absolute sincerity in his eyes—a powerful man offering to surrender the most precious thing in his life because it was right.
"Victor," Evelyn said softly. "Do you love Sophie?"
"More than my own life," he answered instantly.
"Then why would I take her father away from her?" Evelyn asked.
Victor blinked, stunned. "Evelyn... I am the son of the woman who ruined your life."

"And you are the man who held Sophie through two years of silence," Evelyn replied, her voice filled with quiet strength. "She knows your touch. She knows your voice. I won't heal my heartbreak by breaking hers. We do this together, Victor. We protect her together."
Victor stared at her, a single tear escaping his eye, reflecting the firelight as it traced down his cheek.
