Chapter 3 - The Breach at Midnight

Upstairs, the quiet night was shattered by the sharp, agonizing screech of the center’s main security alarm. Lily, who had been sleeping in the staff quarters, bolted upright, her heart hammering against her ribs. The sound brought back terrifying memories of her captivity two years prior, the cold walls, the feeling of utter helplessness.
“Dad!” she screamed, throwing open her door into the dark hallway. “Evelyn!”
A heavy hand clamped gently over her mouth from the shadows. She gasped, ready to fight, until she smelled the familiar scent of cedar and gun oil.
“Stay low, Lily. Don't make a sound,” Arthur whispered in her ear, his voice calm, steady, and utterly terrifying in its cold precision. He guided her into the reinforced pantry behind the kitchen, where Evelyn was already waiting, holding a small tactical flashlight. “We have an external breach. Three men, highly trained, moving with night-vision gear. They cut the primary power lines at the main road.”
“Is it… is it the same people from before?” Lily whispered, her voice trembling but her eyes wide with a fierce, defiant courage.
“No. It’s someone worse,” Arthur said, checking the tactical monitors on a battery-powered tablet. The outdoor cameras showed three dark silhouettes moving through the blooming bluebonnet gardens, their weapons held at a low-ready position. “They aren't here to destroy the center. They’re here for the server cores. And they’re here for you.”
“I’m not running this time, Dad,” Lily said, her jaw tightening. “Two years ago, I was a victim. Today, I’m the director of this center. These families trust us.”
“You aren't running, Lily. You’re holding the fort,” Arthur corrected, handing Evelyn a spare communication radio. “Evelyn, take the emergency manual override to the safe room beneath the barn. If they bypass the main doors, seal the perimeter. I’m going to go greet our guests.”
Before Lily could argue, Arthur slipped out of the pantry, disappearing into the dark house like a ghost returning to the cemetery.
He moved through the familiar corridors of the main building, using his intimate knowledge of the structure’s blind spots. The first intruder stepped through the shattered glass of the rear sunroom, the green glow of his night-vision goggles illuminating the dust motes in the air.

The man never saw Arthur coming. Arthur stepped out from behind a heavy oak pillar, grabbing the barrel of the intruder’s rifle, twisting it violently to disarm him, and delivering a devastating strike to the man’s throat with his elbow. The intruder collapsed without a sound.
Arthur caught the falling rifle before it hit the floor, checking the chamber by touch alone. But as he looked down at the unconscious man’s uniform, he saw a patch sewn onto the shoulder—a silver wolf emblem. It wasn't Vanguard Solutions. It was the personal insignia of Marcus Sterling, the man who had abandoned Arthur’s unit in Colombia.
