Chapter 9 - The Ghost Returned

The tactical extraction was a masterpiece of military precision. With the Vanguard facility blinded by the steam blowout and their communications jammed by the FBI units that Agent Harris had deployed the moment the pressure valve blew, the private security force surrendered without a single casualty.
Arthur and Lily moved through the lower holding cells, clearing the facility room by room until they reached the high-security medical wing.
Arthur threw open the final reinforced door. Inside, still tied to the steel chair but completely unharmed by the chaos outside, was Vance. He looked up through the dim emergency lights, a weary, emotional smile breaking across his scarred face as he saw Arthur standing in the doorway.
“You’re late for extraction, Commander,” Vance croaked, his voice thick with emotion.
Arthur dropped his weapon to its sling, stepping forward and cutting the thick zip-ties binding his old friend’s wrists. He pulled Vance up, embracing him tightly in a fierce, brotherhood hug that had been five years in the making. “I told you in the jungle, Vance. I don't leave my people behind.”
“I see you brought backup,” Vance said, looking over Arthur’s shoulder at Lily, who was standing guard at the doorway with a recovered security rifle, her posture steady and proud.

“That’s Director Miller,” Arthur said, his voice thick with undeniable pride. “She runs the sanctuary now.”
As they walked out of the glass fortress into the bright Texas sunshine, the parking lot was filled with flashing blue lights. Federal agents were loading Marcus Sterling and his remaining corporate executives into the backs of armored transport vans. The Vanguard empire had fallen, its data seized, its tracking software dismantled permanently, and its victims finally set free. The drama was over; the justice had been served.
