Chapter 8 - The Steam and the Sword

Deep within the dark, concrete tunnels beneath the facility, Arthur heard the order through his intercepted radio scanner. He didn't stop moving. His tactical flashlight illuminated the massive digital valve controlling the bio-synthetic filtration loop.

“Not today, Marcus,” Arthur muttered to himself.

He slammed the digital transceiver into the valve’s maintenance port, forcing the master override code into the system. The progress bar on his handheld screen filled instantly: 100% Override. Pressure Release Initialized.

Outside, a deafening, metallic roar shook the entire Vanguard facility. The main cooling towers erupted, releasing a massive, blinding wall of high-pressure white steam that engulfed the security perimeters, the outdoor cameras, and the thermal imaging arrays. The facility’s emergency alarms began to shriek, red hazard lights bathing the corridors in a bloody glow.

“What is that?!” Sterling shouted up in the conference room, his vision obscured by the thick white fog pressing against the windows.

Taking advantage of the sudden chaos and confusion, Lily didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy crystal water pitcher from the conference table and smashed it directly against the side of the nearest guard’s head. He stumbled backward, his weapon firing a wild burst into the ceiling before he collapsed.

The second guard lunged for her, but the conference room doors were suddenly kicked open with explosive force.

Arthur Miller burst through the steam, his weapon drawn. He fired two precise, non-lethal shots, neutralizing the second guard instantly. He didn't look at Sterling; his eyes were fixed entirely on his daughter. “Lily! Down!”

Lily dropped to the floor just as Sterling drew a concealed pistol from his waist. Arthur fired, his bullet striking the weapon directly out of Sterling’s hand, sending the silver gun spinning across the floorboards.

Sterling cradled his shattered, bloody fingers, backing up against the window, his arrogant composure completely shattered. “Arthur… wait! We can make a deal! The database… it’s worth fifty million on the dark web! We can split it! You can secure your daughter’s future forever!”

“My daughter’s future is already secure,” Arthur said, his voice cold as the grave as he walked over, pressing the warm barrel of his weapon against Sterling’s forehead. “Because you’re never going to be a part of it again.”
