Chapter 4 - The War Room

At 2:00 AM, while the rest of the town slept, the fifth floor of the Federal Courthouse was alive with light and feverish activity.
Arthur stood in front of a massive glass wall filled with financial flowcharts, wiretap logs, and photos of suspects linked to the Whitmore empire. Beside him stood General Vance, who had flown in from Washington on a military jet.
"Your daughter’s medical report just came in from Walter Reed," General Vance said quietly, handing Arthur a sealed folder. "Fractured cheekbone, two broken ribs, severe contusions around her trachea, and a concussion. The doctors say she will make a full physical recovery, but she’s traumatized."
Arthur took a deep breath, reading the medical summary. "She saved herself, Marcus. She had the courage to hit 'record' when most people would have frozen in terror. She’s stronger than Richard ever knew."
"We’re moving on the entire network at dawn," Vance explained, pointing to the glass wall. "We have simultaneous arrest warrants for Richard Whitmore Jr., Margaret Whitmore, Chief Dan Miller, Mayor Edward Harris, and four local judges who accepted bribes."
"Richard’s legal team is going to try to destroy evidence at their corporate headquarters before the warrant clears," Arthur pointed out, pointing at a photo of the twenty-story Whitmore Tower in downtown Dallas. "Their server room has a automated thermite wipe protocol. If they hit that switch, five years of digital ledgers dissolve into slag."
"Can you stop it?" Vance asked.
Arthur smiled a cold, dangerous smile. "I designed that server architecture when I consulted for defense contractors fifteen years ago. Give me a tactical team of four men. I’ll secure the physical servers myself before their lawyers even know we’re in the building."
Thirty minutes later, Arthur was dressed in a dark tactical suit, wearing a headset, flanked by four elite SWAT operators inside a blackout van idling outside Whitmore Tower.
Through the van's monitor, Arthur watched two luxury sedans pull into the underground garage of the tower. Out stepped Julian Vance—Arthur Vance’s slick nephew and head legal counsel for Whitmore Group—carrying a heavy briefcase and entering the private executive elevator.
"He's going to the twentieth floor to trigger the server wipe," Arthur said into his comms. "Team, move in."
Using an override keycard Arthur had constructed using old DOD master codes, the team slipped into the building's basement level silently, bypassing the security guards who were busy watching television in the lobby.
They took the service elevator straight to the twentieth floor.
When the elevator doors slid open, Julian Vance was standing in front of the main server vault, frantically typing a master deletion code into a glowing keypad.
"Stop right there, Mr. Vance," Arthur’s voice rang out through the sterile room.
Julian spun around in terror, dropping his laptop. "Who the hell are you?! Security!"
Two armed private security guards raised their pistols, but Arthur’s SWAT team breached the doorway in a flash, tackling both guards to the floor and disarming them in seconds.
Arthur walked past the struggling men, stepped up to the server keypad, and pressed a three-button hard-stop command. The red deletion light turned solid blue.
"Override complete," Arthur said smoothly, pulling the master hard drives from their racks and placing them into electromagnetic shield bags. "All financial records secured."

Julian slumped against the wall, trembling. "You... you're just Lily's redneck father... how do you know how to bypass corporate defense encryption?!"
Arthur leaned down, pulling Julian up by his expensive silk tie. "I spent twenty years hunting international criminals, son. Your little real estate scam was just a Sunday walk in the park."
