Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master’s Gamble

The remaining two intruders retreated the moment they realized their scout had been neutralized with professional efficiency. By the time the local sheriff’s department arrived, stimulated by a silent alarm Arthur had tripped via a secondary satellite relay, the grounds were empty, save for the first unconscious mercenary and a heavily encrypted laptop left behind in the garden.

The morning sun rose over a tense, fractured sanctuary. The families were safely relocated to a secure hotel in the next county under David’s supervision, leaving the refuge center completely empty except for Arthur, Lily, Evelyn, and Agent Harris, a trusted federal investigator who had helped them during their first crisis.

“Marcus Sterling is the CEO of Vanguard Solutions now,” Harris explained, pacing the floor of Arthur’s office while looking at the recovered laptop. “He didn't just survive the Colombia operation, Arthur. He orchestrated it. He sold out your unit to the cartel to fund his initial corporate startup. The agency found out, but instead of court-martialing him, they put him on the payroll because his tech was too valuable.”

“And Vance?” Lily asked, sitting beside her father at the desk. She was pale, but her voice was entirely stable. “The man on the radio?”

“Vance is being held at a black site inside the Vanguard facility in Austin,” Harris said grimly. “They’re keeping him alive because his biometric data is the only thing that can authorize the transfer of the legacy database—the international tracking files Arthur took two years ago. Sterling needs both halves: Vance’s live biometrics and Arthur’s master encryption key.”

Arthur looked out the window at the torn-up bluebonnet garden. “He tried to take Lily last night to use her as leverage. He knew I wouldn't risk her life for a key.”

“But he failed,” Evelyn said, placing a supportive hand on Arthur’s shoulder. “So what’s his next move?”

Right on cue, the recovered laptop on the desk hissed to life. The screen flickered, revealing a high-definition video feed of a sterile, white room. Tied to a heavy steel chair in the center was Vance. He looked older, his face scarred from the chopper crash years ago, but his eyes were sharp as he looked directly into the camera lens.

Beside him stood Marcus Sterling, immaculate in a tailored gray suit, holding a silver pen like a conductor’s baton.

“Hello, Arthur,” Sterling said, his voice smooth and dripping with institutional arrogance. “Two years of playing the peaceful family man hasn't dulled your reflexes, I see. But let’s stop the games. You have forty-eight hours to bring the master encryption key to our Austin facility. If you don't, I will execute Vance on a live stream, and then I will release the complete identities of every single family currently protected under your refuge center to the open market. Let’s see how long your sanctuary lasts when the world knows exactly where the sheep are hiding.”
