Chapter 3 - The Evidence Locker

Two hours later, Arthur sat in a high-security conference room inside the Federal Building in downtown Dallas. Across the table sat Special Agent Sarah Chen, head of the FBI’s Public Corruption Unit, along with Commander Briggs.
On the table between them lay Lily’s phone, sealed in an anti-static evidence bag, alongside Arthur’s encrypted laptop.
"We extracted the data from your daughter's phone, Director Miller," Agent Chen said, her face grim. "What we found goes far beyond domestic abuse. Lily wasn't just recording Richard's violence—she was recording what he said before he hit her."
Agent Chen pressed play on the laptop.
The audio speaker filled the room with Richard’s harsh, arrogant voice:
"You think you can leave me, Lily? Look at this ledger! I own the District Attorney. I own Chief Miller. I pay two million dollars a year into shell corporations that fund the Mayor’s reelection campaign! If you try to run, I’ll have your old man arrested for tax fraud. I’ll make sure he dies in a state prison!"
Then came the sickening sound of a heavy blow, followed by Lily’s gasp of pain and Margaret’s cold voice in the background: "Clean yourself up, Lily. We have guests arriving in an hour."
Arthur’s hands clenched into tight fists under the table, his knuckles turning white. He took a slow, deep breath, regulating his heart rate through sheer force of will.
"That audio proves premeditation, extortion, and systemic public corruption," Agent Chen stated. "When we cross-referenced the corporate names Richard mentioned in those audio files with our federal financial database, we hit a goldmine. The Whitmore Financial Group isn't just a real estate firm—it’s a massive money-laundering hub for international crime syndicates."
"They used local development projects to wash dirty capital," Arthur deduced instantly. "Which is why the local authorities protected Richard. If Richard fell, the entire local government went down with him."
"Exactly," Chen nodded. "Chief Miller wasn't just turning a blind eye to domestic violence; he was receiving a two-hundred-thousand-dollar annual retainer disguised as 'consulting fees' from a Whitmore subsidiary."
"What about Richard’s bail hearing?" Arthur asked cold-bloodedly.
"His family attorneys are already filing an emergency habeas corpus petition with State Judge Thomas Vance—Arthur Vance’s cousin," Chen warned. "They’re trying to get Richard released on a fifty-thousand-dollar bond before sunrise tomorrow."
Arthur stood up, pulling a black leather ledger from his own duffel bag. "Not if we file federal racketeering, human trafficking, and attempted murder charges directly in the Eastern District Court tonight."

Agent Chen looked at Arthur with deep respect. "You brought your old intelligence files?"
"I never throw away intelligence," Arthur replied. "When Richard married my daughter three years ago, I didn't completely trust him. I ran a background check through my old European contacts. I found three offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands registered under his mother’s maiden name. Tonight, we freeze those accounts."
