Chapter 6 - The Austin Insertion

The morning of the presentation was suffocatingly hot. The corporate headquarters of Vanguard Solutions rose like a jagged glass shard out of the Austin hills, surrounded by high concrete walls and armed checkpoints.
Lily sat in the back of the center’s utility van, wearing a sharp navy blazer, her hair tied back in a professional bun. In her lap sat a leather briefcase containing the presentation materials—and a highly specialized digital transceiver hidden beneath the false bottom.
In the driver’s seat sat David, his hands steady on the steering wheel, while Arthur lay flat in the concealed compartment beneath the rear floorboards, surrounded by tactical gear and weapon cases.
“Approaching Checkpoint Alpha,” David said quietly into his collar mic.
The van came to a halt. A Vanguard security guard with an earpiece stepped out, holding a tablet. He scanned the vehicle’s plates and looked at Lily through the window. “Purpose of visit?”
“Lily Miller, Director of the Miller Refuge Center,” Lily said, her voice clear and completely devoid of fear. She offered a warm, professional smile. “We’re here for the 10:00 AM corporate social responsibility briefing with Mr. Sterling’s executive team.”
The guard checked his tablet, the screen flashing green. “Cleared. Park in Sector 4, visitor parking. Do not depart from the designated guest corridors.”
The van rolled through the massive steel gates. As soon as they parked in the shadow of the cooling towers, Lily grabbed her briefcase. She looked down at the floorboards, knowing Arthur was listening through the audio relay.
“I’m going in, Dad,” she whispered.

“I’m right behind you, kiddo,” Arthur’s voice came through her tiny earpiece, low and reassuring. “Five minutes until the loop is ready. Stay near the public elevator bays.”
Lily stepped out of the van, walking into the grand, marble-floored lobby of the Vanguard facility. The air inside was freezing, smelling of ozone and expensive cologne. She walked up to the reception desk, her heels clicking against the polished stone, entirely aware that dozens of security cameras were tracking her every move. She was in the heart of the machine now, and the drama was about to reach its boiling point.
