Chapter 14 - The Internal Enemy
The discovery of a suicide capsule confirmed the worst: this wasn't a rogue band of Vanguard survivors looking for a payday. This was a highly funded, fanatical covert operations cell executing a long-term contingency plan.
Arthur and Vance returned to the refuge center before dawn, their expressions grim. The body of the mercenary leader was placed in the secure medical room in the basement, where David began running a biometric scan to identify the man’s origins.
"Nothing on the global databases," David said, rubbing his eyes as the computer screen cycled through thousands of facial recognition files. "No military records, no criminal history. He doesn't exist, Arthur."
"He existed enough to try and blind us," Vance said, pacing the room, his old military energy burning through his veins. "If they're using suicide capsules, they aren't here to negotiate. They're here to erase evidence. And the biggest piece of evidence against the old network is sitting right upstairs."
Lily walked into the room, holding a printed financial ledger. "They aren't just targeting our communication lines, Vance. Look at the foundation's funding accounts. Over the last forty-eight hours, three anonymous short-sellers have been attacking the logistics firms that fund our operating costs. They're trying to freeze our assets using legal and financial maneuvers while their black-ops teams handle the physical side."

Arthur looked at the ledger, then at the map of the valley. He realized the strategy wasn't a direct assault. The enemy was trying to create a multi-front crisis—financial ruin, electronic isolation, and psychological terror—to force the refuge center to disband.
"They want to scatter the families," Arthur said, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the pattern. "If the families panic and leave the refuge center, they become soft targets. The enemy can pick them off one by one to ensure silence. We have to keep everyone together. This valley is the only place where the law can't touch them, and the shadows can't hide from us."
