Chapter 11 - The Shadow on the Concrete

The peace of Kellerman Square was a fragile glass ornament, beautiful but easily shattered. As James held Callie and Bea close, his eyes caught a figure standing near the edge of the fountain. A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit—not unusual for the financial district, but this man wasn't moving. He wasn't checking his watch or looking at his phone. He was staring directly at James, his eyes cold and calculated.

When James blinked, the man turned and vanished into the crowd. A cold prickle of sweat formed at the back of James’s neck. Eleanor’s journal felt suddenly heavy in his lap. He knew the peace he had built over the past year was about to be tested. The Ashby empire, though restructured to fund social services, still had enemies—chief among them his estranged stepbrother, Marcus, who believed James had stolen his birthright.

"James? You're squeezing too tight," Bea murmured, wriggling slightly.

"Sorry, sweetheart," James said, forcing a warm smile as he loosened his grip. "How about we get those hot dogs before the harmonica player finishes his set?"

That night, after dropping the twins off at their foster-turned-adoptive mother’s apartment, James returned to his penthouse. The silence of the large rooms usually comforted him, but tonight it felt suffocating. He opened Eleanor’s journal to the last page she had written before her passing.

Among her notes on city architecture, there was a string of numbers written in the margin: 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W - Under the hearth.

Before James could ponder the coordinates, his phone buzzed. An unknown number. He answered, his voice steady. "James Ashby."

"You look comfortable on that bench, James," a smooth, venomous voice whispered on the other end. Marcus. "Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. The board meeting tomorrow will be your last day as the city's savior."
