Chapter 16 - The Trap is Set

The next morning, James met with District Attorney Evelyn Vance in a secluded diner on the city limits. Vance was known for her incorruptible reputation. She pored over the ledger while James drank black coffee, his body aching from the night before.

"This is explosive, James," Vance whispered, closing the book. "This links Marcus to the Volkov Syndicate. It’s enough to put him away for twenty years. But there’s a catch. Marcus has already filed the incompetence motion with a corrupt judge. By noon today, your assets will be frozen, and you’ll lose legal control of the company. We won't have time to process the arrest warrant before he liquidates the charity funds."

James stared into his coffee, watching the dark liquid swirl. "Then we don't wait for the warrant. We make him confess publicly."

"How?" Vance asked. "He's too smart for that."

"He's arrogant, not smart," James corrected. "He thinks he's won. We play into his ego. I'll call an emergency press conference at Kellerman Square. He won't be able to resist showing up to claim his victory."

James called Marcus directly from a burner phone. "Marcus. I'm signing the company over to you. Noon. Kellerman Square, in front of the press. Let's end this without more blood."

On the other end, Marcus laughed. "Smartest thing you've said all year, brother. See you at noon."
