Chapter 14 - The Escape

James hugged the lockbox tight against his chest. "This ends tonight," he said, backing toward the shattered bay window behind him.

"It ends for you," the thug replied, rushing forward.

James dodged the first swing of the iron pipe, the weapon smashing into a priceless antique vase. Despite his past health scares, James had spent the last year running and rebuilding his strength. He kicked a heavy oak chair into the path of the second attacker, sending the man sprawling.

But the third man caught him, slamming James against the wall. The wind knocked out of him, James saw flashes of the dark drain from a year ago. Not again, he thought. I have people to live for now.

With a burst of adrenaline, James smashed the metal lockbox against the side of the man’s head. The thug groaned and dropped to his knees. James didn't waste a second; he dove through the broken window, glass tearing at his jacket, and tumbled onto the muddy lawn.

He scrambled into his SUV, the engine roaring to life just as the men emerged from the house. He sped down the dark, winding driveway into the rainy night. He needed to hide the evidence, and he needed to protect Callie and Bea. Marcus was desperate, which made him lethal.
