Chapter 28 - The Battle for the Light

"You won't get away with this, Julian," Bea said, stepping in front of her sister. "The federal prosecutors already have your bank records. They know you funded the chemical purchase."
"It won't matter if you aren't alive to testify," Julian snarled, lunging forward with the wrench.
Callie, using her heavy metal architectural rule-book and flashlight, blocked his swing, the metal clashing loudly in the narrow tunnel. Bea rushed the second man, using her agility to dodge his grasp and pull the chemical device off the water main, stopping the flow of poison.
The struggle was fierce. Julian, driven by a lifetimes’ worth of bitterness and greed, fought with terrifying strength. He knocked Callie to the ground, raising the wrench to strike.
"Julian, look up!" Bea screamed.
She shone her high-intensity tactical flashlight directly into his eyes, blinding him. At the same instant, Callie kicked his legs out from under him. Julian fell heavily against the concrete floor, the wrench clattering into the dark water of the drainage channel.
From the entrance of the tunnel, the sound of heavy footsteps and shouting echoed. District Attorney Vance’s special tactical unit, guided by the GPS tracker Bea had planted on the chemical device, stormed the tunnel, their weapons drawn.
