Chapter 21 - The Shadow at the Altar

The applause that erupted as Marcus and Claire exchanged their vows inside the glass conservatory of the Sterling-Vance Estate was supposed to signal the end of their long, agonizing journey through the dark underbelly of Washington politics.

As Marcus slipped the platinum ring onto Claire’s finger, his dark eyes burned with an intensity that made her chest ache with happiness. He leaned down, placing a hand on the small of her back, and pulled her into a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of sweet champagne and absolute devotion.

"Forever, Claire," Marcus murmured against her lips, his breath warm in the cool air of the garden house. "No more running. No more hiding."

"Forever," Claire whispered, wrapping her delicate arms around his neck, the soft lace of her veil cascading over his shoulders like falling snow.

Outside the glass walls, the winter sun struck the fresh snow, casting brilliant prisms of light across the hundreds of white roses adorning the aisle. Senator Vance, Marcus’s uncle and their fiercest ally in Capitol Hill, clapped warmly from the front row alongside Director Reynolds of the Federal Intelligence Taskforce.

For two glorious hours, the world belonged entirely to them.

The reception in the grand ballroom was a masterclass in Washington elegance. Crystal chandeliers threw dancing light across polished marble floors, where senators, diplomats, and high-ranking intelligence officers mingled, celebrating the union of two of the most powerful families in the city.

Claire stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass doors overlooking the snow-covered lawn, holding a flute of vintage champagne. Marcus had stepped away for just a moment to address a brief inquiry from the French Ambassador.

Claire watched her husband across the room—his broad shoulders filling out the tailored tuxedo, his commanding presence drawing every eye, yet his gaze kept returning to her every few seconds, ensuring she felt safe.

"It’s a lovely party, Mrs. Sterling," a smooth, unfamiliar voice purred behind her.

Claire turned gracefully, keeping her composure intact—a skill forged through years of surviving political landmines.

Standing before her was a man in his late fifties, dressed in an impeccably cut charcoal suit. He had silver-streaked hair, sharp blue eyes that held zero warmth, and a subtle scar cutting through his left eyebrow.

"Thank you," Claire replied, her voice smooth as silk. "And you are?"

"Victor Vance," the man said, bowing his head slightly with a chilling smile. "Your husband’s estranged elder half-brother. Though I suppose my dear uncle Senator Vance neglected to mention I was still on this side of the soil."

Claire felt a cold shiver trace its way down her spine. Victor Vance. She recognized the name from secret files Marcus had shown her months ago—the exiled black sheep of the Vance dynasty who had disappeared into Eastern Europe seven years ago after being implicated in high-level defense espionage.

"Victor," Marcus’s deep voice cut through the air like a thunderclap.

In a fraction of a second, Marcus was standing at Claire’s side. His body language shifted instantly from romantic groom to lethal predator. He placed a protective hand on Claire’s waist, pulling her slightly behind him, his dark eyes locked onto Victor with pure malice.

"You’re trespassing on private property, Victor," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous rumble. "The federal restraining order signed by the Attorney General gives my security team authorization to put a bullet in your chest the moment you step foot on this estate."

Victor raised his gloved hands in mock surrender, his smile widening into a terrifying smirk.

"Relax, little brother," Victor chuckled softly. "I didn't come to ruin your fairy-tale wedding. I simply came to deliver a wedding gift."

Victor reached into his inner jacket pocket. Instantly, three discreet security guards in black suits reached into their jackets. Victor slowly pulled out a small, heavy silver envelope sealed with black wax.

He held it out toward Claire, ignoring Marcus's lethal glare.

"A little token from our father’s secret vault in Geneva," Victor whispered. "You think you’ve won, Marcus? You think taking down the Syndicate cleared your path? You haven't even seen the real board yet."

Victor set the silver envelope on a nearby marble bistro table, took a slow step backward, and melted into the crowd of diplomats near the terrace exit before the guards could converge on him.

"Marcus," Claire breathed, taking her husband's arm, feeling the rigid tension in his muscles. "Who is he really?"

May you like

Marcus picked up the silver envelope, his thumb tracing the black wax seal.

"He’s the man who killed my father," Marcus whispered, his voice laced with an ancient, dark fury. "And he’s back to take everything we have left."
