Chapter 27 - The Ghost of Arthur Sterling

Three hours later, inside a secure safehouse provided by the Swiss Federal Police in the quiet village of Montreux, a warm fire crackled in the stone fireplace.

Claire sat on a leather sofa, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a mug of steaming tea.

Marcus stood near the hearth, the golden firelight catching the sharp angles of his jaw. He held his father’s faded envelope in his hands. His fingers trembled slightly—a rare, vulnerable sight for a man who had faced down armed mercenaries without blinking.

"Do you want me to read it with you?" Claire asked gently, setting her tea down and stepping up to stand beside him.

Marcus looked at her, his dark eyes filled with deep emotion. He took her hand, holding it tightly, and carefully tore open the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of heavy parchment paper, written in dark black ink.

To my son, Marcus,

If you are reading this letter, it means I have failed to protect you from the shadow of my own mistakes. It means Victor has chosen the path of ruin, and you have been forced to step into the fire to save our family's legacy.

The glass drive you hold does not contain a weapon, Marcus. It contains 'Aegis Prime'—a defense protocol designed to shut down every corrupt, covert surveillance network built by the Syndicate and their allies across the globe.

Victor believes this drive holds power over nations. He does not realize it is a mirror designed to expose the truth.

I knew the danger I was stepping into the night I died. But my only regret was leaving you alone in the cold. Find a woman who matches your fire, Marcus. Build a life that is defined by love, not vengeance. The Sterling name belongs to you now. Make it mean something good.

With eternal pride,

Your Father, Arthur.

A heavy silence settled over the warm room.

A single tear escaped Marcus’s eye, tracing a path down his cheek before he could catch it. He folded the letter carefully, placing it into his inner jacket pocket, right next to his heart.

Claire stepped close, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling his head down onto her shoulder. Marcus held her tightly, buried his face into her dark hair, his broad chest heaving with silent, long-overdue grief.

"He knew you would beat them, Marcus," Claire whispered softly into his ear, stroking his hair. "He knew you would become the man you are today."

"I couldn't have done it without you, Claire," Marcus rasped, his voice thick with emotion. "I was a hollow shell before you walked into my life. Fighting for revenge was all I knew."

"And now?" Claire asked, pulling back slightly to look into his dark, loving eyes.

May you like

Marcus looked down at her—his wife, his partner, his equal in every sense of the word. He smiled—a soft, breathtaking smile that warmed the entire room.

"Now," Marcus said, kissing her forehead gently, "I’m fighting for our future."
