Chapter 3 - The Public Explosion

The doors of the boardroom clicked shut as the Apex executives exited.

The moment the heavy glass panels sealed them in, Ethan whirled around, his face dark with fury. He slammed his hand down onto the mahogany conference table, causing Lily to jump.

"What the hell was that?!" Ethan roared, his composure completely shattered. "You sat there and let me drown in front of Marcus Vance! You knew the answer to the labor question!"

Claire calmly gathered her tablet, her presentation remote, and her leather notebook, placing them neatly into her briefcase. She didn't look up until everything was packed.

"You are the Vice President of Regional Development, Ethan," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of icy precision. "You earn two hundred and twenty thousand dollars a year. It is not my job to spoon-feed you answers to basic compliance questions that were emailed to you three days ago."

"You sabotaged me!" Ethan yelled, stepping toward her. "You let me look like an idiot because you’re holding a personal grudge about a fucking train seat!"

"You looked like an idiot because you are unprepared," Claire fired back, stepping right up to him, refusing to yield an inch of ground. "You spent five years riding on my coattails, Ethan. I wrote your quarterly reviews. I fixed your budget errors. I introduced you to the board. And the first time I asked you for basic respect on a train, you handed my seat to an intern to prove to yourself that you were the alpha in our relationship."

Lily began to sob quietly in the corner. "Ethan... please... everyone outside can hear you..."

"Shut up, Lily!" Ethan snapped, turning his rage on the terrified girl before swinging back to Claire. "Do you think you’re irreplaceable, Claire?! Do you really think this company revolves around you? I made you! I gave you the platform to lead these pitches!"

Claire let out a dry, incredulous laugh. "You made me? I had a master’s degree from Georgetown and a seven-figure portfolio before I met you. When we started dating, you couldn't even qualify for a credit card without a co-signer!"

Ethan’s eyes flared with a desperate, venomous spite. "You think you're so smart. You think you can just walk away from me and our wedding? My mother is right about you—you're a cold, barren workaholic who's terrified that young, vibrant women like Lily are going to render you obsolete!"

The air in the room seemed to freeze.

Claire stared at him. The last remaining shadow of affection, memory, or nostalgia she had harbored for this man withered and died in that exact second.

"My lawyer served a formal revocation notice to your mother's bank this morning for the $9,000 unauthorized loan," Claire said, her voice terrifyingly quiet. "By noon, the Arlington condo’s joint account will be legally frozen pending an asset partition suit. And as for Harrington Urban Design..."

She pulled a crisp, white envelope from her breast pocket and set it gently on the conference table between them.

"That is my formal letter of resignation, effective immediately."

Ethan gasped, his jaw dropping. "Resignation?! You can't resign right now! The Boston contract—"

"The Boston contract pitch is complete," Claire interrupted smoothly. "My employment contract includes an immediate severance clause if a senior manager creates a hostile work environment. You yelling at me in front of an intern in a client’s boardroom fits the definition quite nicely."

She picked up her briefcase, adjusted her coat over her arm, and walked toward the double doors.

"Claire!" Ethan shouted, taking two hurried steps after her. "Claire, stop! You can't just leave me to manage this account alone!"

Claire paused at the door, turning her head slightly to look at him over her shoulder.

May you like

"You have Lily," Claire said softly. "I'm sure she can help you with the labor compliance files."

She pulled open the doors and walked out into the lobby, leaving Ethan standing in the middle of the empty boardroom, staring at her resignation letter as his golden world collapsed around his ears.
