Chapter 24 - The Pressure Chamber

Inside the sealed vault, the silence was suffocating.
Instantly, red emergency backup lights flickered on, casting blood-colored shadows across the cold steel walls.
"Claire! Are you hurt?" Marcus’s voice boomed through the small space as he immediately grabbed her shoulders, pulling her against his chest.
"I’m fine," Claire said, her breath calm and controlled despite the rising adrenaline. "Weber didn't trigger that door. The bank’s main control system was hacked externally."
Above them, a high-pitched hiss echoed through the ventilation grates.
"Nitrogen gas," Marcus growled, looking up. "They’re displacing the oxygen. They want to suffocate us and open the door once we’re unconscious."
"Not on my watch," Claire said, pulling out her silver compact mirror. She popped the back casing, revealing a small red circuit board, and jammed it directly into the vault’s emergency maintenance portal beside the pedestal.
A sharp electronic screech hummed through the air. The ventilation hiss stilled for a fraction of a second, then reversed.
"It worked!" Claire said. "The jammer forced the system into a diagnostic purge! But it’s only going to hold for six minutes before the bank’s master server resets!"
"That’s all the time I need," Marcus said.
He smashed the glass cover of the brass safety-deposit box with the heavy butt of his pistol. Inside sat a black leather ledger and a small, glowing glass drive containing the raw neural core of Arthur Sterling’s master defense project.
Beside the drive was a handwritten envelope addressed to Marcus in his father's bold penmanship.
Marcus grabbed the drive and the letter, shoving them into his inner pocket.
"How do we get out?" Claire asked, looking at the six-ton titanium door that showed zero signs of manual release.
Marcus looked at the heavy steel pedestal in the center of the room. It was anchored to the floor by four high-grade steel bolts.
"Claire, stand back," Marcus ordered.
He drew a small, high-density thermite charge from his belt—tactical equipment he had brought despite Swiss banking laws—and slapped it directly onto the vault’s primary door hinge.
"Cover your eyes!" Marcus roared, wrapping his heavy body around Claire, shielding her completely against the wall.
He pressed the remote detonator.
A blinding white flash erupted in the small room, accompanied by a deafening heat pulse that melted the titanium hinge like hot butter. The heat was immense, but Marcus’s body remained a human fortress over Claire, refusing to let a single spark touch her.
Before the smoke could clear, Marcus slammed his shoulder against the scorched door with demonic strength.
The six-ton steel door buckled outward, crashing onto the marble floor of the corridor with a thunderous boom.

"Go! Go!" Marcus yelled, grabbing Claire’s hand as they burst out through the smoke into the bank hallway.
Waiting for them at the end of the hall were four mercenaries clad in unmarked black combat gear, submachine guns raised.
