Chapter 5 - The Emergency Board Call

At 4:15 PM, a high-level video conference was convened across three cities.

On the screen sat Richard Harrington, the seventy-year-old founder and Senior Managing Partner of Harrington Urban Design, sitting in his Manhattan office; Ethan Cole, sitting nervously in his Boston hotel room; and Claire Bennett, sitting comfortably in her suite.

Richard Harrington was a man of few words and terrifying authority. He looked through his half-moon spectacles at the three video feeds with deep, simmering irritation.

"Ethan," Richard’s voice growled through the speakers. "I just received an urgent notice from Apex Global. Marcus Vance signed a $42 million contract, but he included a rider that demands your complete removal from the project, while naming Claire as the exclusive lead. Care to explain why the client is refusing to work with my Vice President?"

Ethan straightened his suit jacket, his voice trembling as he tried to put on a brave face. "Mr. Harrington... there was a minor misunderstanding during the presentation. Claire had a personal emotional outburst last night regarding our upcoming wedding, and she intentionally created friction in front of the client to embarrass me."

"Is that so?" Richard’s gray eyebrows rose. He turned his eyes toward Claire’s box on the screen. "Claire. You submitted your formal resignation three hours ago. Why?"

Claire adjusted her camera slightly, looking relaxed, serene, and entirely in command.

"I resigned, Mr. Harrington, because Ethan Cole created a hostile work environment," Claire stated calmly. "On the train ride to Boston, Mr. Cole took my assigned first-class window seat—which was booked under my corporate account for strategic prep work—and gave it to an intern, Ms. Lily Harper. When I questioned him, he verbally demeaned me in front of passengers."

Richard’s face began to darken. "An intern?"

"Furthermore," Claire continued, pulling up a digital file on her screen, "during the pitch this morning, Mr. Cole was completely unprepared on Section Four regarding labor compliance. He attempted to delegate technical questions to the intern, who had no security clearance or preparation for the meeting. Mr. Vance noticed his incompetence and requested my exclusive leadership as a result."

"That's a lie!" Ethan shouted into his microphone. "She's bitter! She's retaliating against me because we broke off our engagement!"

"Ethan," Richard barked, silencing him instantly. "Shut your mouth."

Claire opened a secondary document on her shared screen. "Finally, Mr. Harrington, I have attached a preliminary forensic financial audit conducted by my attorney, Sarah Jenkins. Over the last fourteen months, Ethan Cole has embezzled eighty-four thousand dollars from our joint account to fund private personal expenses for intern Lily Harper, using company travel vouchers to mask the transactions."

Ethan’s screen went completely still. His face turned as white as a sheet of paper.

"What?" Richard whispered, his voice dropping into a register of sheer, lethal fury. "Corporate funds?"

"Company travel vouchers, Mr. Harrington," Claire confirmed. "The full receipts, including hotel bookings and private vehicle leases, have been sent to your internal compliance department."

Richard stared at Ethan’s video feed. Ethan looked like a man standing before a firing squad. He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out.

"Ethan Cole," Richard said, his tone flat and cold as iron. "Your employment with Harrington Urban Design is terminated, effective immediately. Security will clear out your office in Manhattan by five o'clock. Our legal department will be in contact with you regarding full financial restitution and criminal charges."

"Mr. Harrington, please!" Ethan pleaded, tears springing to his eyes. "Listen to me! Claire manipulated this entire situation! She—"

Richard clicked a button, abruptly severing Ethan’s video feed. His screen went black.

Richard turned back to Claire, his expression softening slightly. "Claire. You are the finest strategist this firm has seen in a decade. I will not let you walk away over the actions of a disgraced crook. I am offering you Ethan’s former position—Senior Vice President of Regional Operations—along with a forty percent salary increase and full control over the $42 million Boston contract."

Claire looked at the screen, feeling a profound wave of validation wash over her. Five years of working in the shadows, five years of lifting up a man who didn't deserve her, had finally led to this moment.

"I accept, Mr. Harrington," Claire said smoothly. "On one condition."

"Name it."

May you like

"I want Lily Harper fired from the internship program, and I want an official non-disclosure audit run on every project Ethan touched over the last two years."

Richard smiled—a cold, ruthless sharp smile. "Consider it done. Welcome to the senior executive team, Vice President Bennett."
