Chapter 28 - The Capitol Siege

The final confrontation did not take place on a distant battlefield, but in the heart of American power: Washington D.C.

Two weeks after the events in Switzerland, the U.S. Senate was holding a emergency closed-door hearing regarding high-level treason within the federal defense network.

Senator Vance sat at the head of the judicial panel inside the historic Senate chamber. Sitting across from him at the witness table were Marcus and Claire Sterling, dressed impeccably in formal charcoal attire, looking every bit the power couple that commanded the city's respect.

Director Reynolds stood by the reinforced oak doors with a team of armed federal marshals.

"Mr. Sterling," Senator Vance announced into his microphone, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling. "The panel is ready to receive your testimony regarding the 'Apex Initiative' and the involved parties."

Marcus adjusted his microphone, his commanding voice filling the chamber.

"Members of the Senate," Marcus spoke clearly. "For eight years, a rogue network operating within our defense apparatus has been siphoning classified intelligence to foreign cartels. The leader of this network is sitting in this room today."

A wave of tense murmurs rippled through the gallery of politicians and reporters.

At the far end of the committee table, Deputy Director Harrison of the Homeland Security Council stood up abruptly, his face flushed red.

"This is absurd!" Harrison shouted, pointing an angry finger at Marcus. "Marcus Sterling is using this panel to settle a personal family vendetta! This hearing is out of order!"

"Sit down, Deputy Director Harrison," Senator Vance ordered coldly.

Claire stepped forward, plugging the silver glass drive from Geneva into the master evidence terminal on the witness podium.

"Deputy Director Harrison," Claire’s clear, melodious voice cut through the commotion like a diamond blade. "On November 14th of last year, three million dollars was transferred from a Swiss account owned by Victor Vance directly into a shell company registered under your wife's maiden name in the Cayman Islands."

The master screens in the Senate chamber flashed to life, displaying decrypted bank ledgers, voice recordings, and satellite tracking logs.

"And here," Claire continued smoothly, tapping the screen, "is a recorded conversation between you and Victor Vance planning the assassination of Director Reynolds."

Harrison’s face went completely bloodless. He backed away from the desk, his hands trembling violently.

"Guards! Arrest that man!" Senator Vance commanded, slamming his gavel down with a sharp boom.

The oak doors burst open. Federal marshals surged into the chamber, snapping steel handcuffs onto Deputy Director Harrison’s wrists as he was dragged away, shouting curses that echoed down the marble hallways.

Outside the Capitol building, standing near the steps under a gray winter sky, stood Victor Vance, surrounded by four secret service agents who had quietly disarmed him five minutes prior.

As Marcus and Claire stepped out onto the grand granite steps of the Capitol, Victor looked up at them, his eyes filled with bitter, defeat-ridden rage.

"You ruined everything, Marcus," Victor spat, his voice trembling through his teeth.

Marcus walked down the steps, stopping three feet from his exiled half-brother. He looked down at Victor not with anger, but with cool, absolute pity.

"You ruined yourself, Victor," Marcus said quietly. "My father left a legacy of honor. You traded it for greed. You will spend the rest of your life in a supermax facility, forgotten by the world."

As the federal agents shoved Victor into the back of an armored van, Marcus turned away, placing his arm around Claire’s shoulders.

The storm that had threatened to destroy their lives for years had finally cleared. The shadows were gone.
