Chapter 12 - The Letter from London

That night, sleep was impossible. The tranquility of our Oxfordshire cottage now felt like a fragile glass castle waiting to be shattered by an iron mallet.
Thomas sat at the heavy oak dining table, surrounding himself with legal briefs, laptop screens, and secure satellite phones. He was not just a loving partner; Thomas Hale was a former high-ranking investigative journalist who now ran one of Europe’s most respected corporate risk intelligence firms. He had spent years defending others, but now the battle was at our very doorstep.
"We aren't going to hide, Claire," Thomas said, his voice low, firm, and grounding as he pulled me down onto his lap. "When you fled London three years ago, you were exhausted, isolated, and terrified. You are no longer that woman. You have me, you have Arthur, and you have an impenetrable legal team."
"You don't understand how far Richard Vance will go," I whispered, resting my forehead against his neck, drawing strength from his steady pulse. "He bought judges, he manipulated the press, he made me feel like I was losing my mind. If he takes Miles back into that cold, sterile mansion in Kensington..."
"He won't," Thomas cut in, his dark eyes blazing with fierce protectiveness. "I will burn his empire to the ground before I let him lay a single finger on our son."
At dawn, a sleek black sedan pulled into our driveway. Out stepped Eleanor Thorne, London’s most formidable family law barrister and a fierce advocate for women’s rights. She walked into our home with the posture of a general entering a war room.
"We have a massive problem, Claire," Eleanor declared without preamble, placing a leather briefcase on the table. "Richard Vance hasn't just filed a custody petition. He has filed a motion claiming that the original custody agreement was signed under severe psychological duress—by Julian."
I gasped. "Julian claims he was under duress?"
"Precisely," Eleanor replied. "They are alleging that you weaponized Miles' childhood health issues to extort money and force Julian into signing away his parental rights. Furthermore, they have hired a high-profile PR firm that is preparing to run a smear campaign across national tabloids, painting you as an unstable, negligent mother hiding out in the countryside with a radical investigative journalist."
The cruelty of the lie made my blood run cold. They were going to rewrite history, turning my greatest sacrifices into acts of malice.
"What is our first move?" Thomas asked, his tone cold and strategic.

"We must go to London," Eleanor said firmly. "We cannot look like we are fleeing the jurisdiction. If we evade the summons, a judge will issue an emergency recovery order, and police will come to this house to remove Miles."
The thought of uniformed officers tearing Miles away from his orchard, away from his swing and his laughter, was a nightmare I refused to endure.
