Chapter 17 - The Trial Begins

The realization of Chloe's betrayal cut deeper than any legal threat. The sanctuary we had built in Oxfordshire had been breached not by force, but by quiet, mercenary deceit.

"Claire, I am so sorry," Chloe sobbed, dropping to her knees on the marble floor of the courthouse corridor. "They threatened my family!"

I looked down at her, not with anger, but with a profound, terrifying clarity. "Get up, Chloe," I said, my voice eerily calm. "You are going to walk into Eleanor Thorne's office right now, and you are going to sign a full, sworn affidavit detailing every single payment, every phone call, and every instruction Marcus Sterling gave you."

"If I do that, Richard Vance will destroy my brother!" she cried.

"And if you don't," Thomas’s voice cut in like a steel blade as he walked up behind us, having overheard the end of the conversation, "I will ensure the Metropolitan Police arrest you within the hour for criminal conspiracy, corporate espionage, and wiretapping."

Chloe collapsed into a chair, broken and terrified, agreeing to cooperate.

By the time the full custody hearing commenced three days later, the courtroom felt like a pressure cooker. News of the impending Vance merger had leaked to the financial markets, and media crews were camped outside the building in massive crowds.

Inside, Justice Henderson presided over a packed room.

Julian Vance took the witness stand first. Guided by his expensive legal team, he put on a tragic act of a grieving father who had been unfairly kept away from his precious son by a vindictive ex-wife.

"I only ever wanted what was best for Miles," Julian lied smoothly, wiping a fake tear from his eye. "Claire took him away when he was weak and sick. She hid him in the countryside to punish me for our divorce."

Eleanor Thorne stood up for cross-examination. She did not raise her voice; she simply picked up a thick stack of blue folders.

"Mr. Vance," Eleanor began, her voice dripping with quiet authority. "You state that you were desperate to see your son over the last three years. Can you tell the court how many times you attempted to call the pediatric clinic in Oxfordshire where Miles receives his check-ups?"

"I... I was blocked from contacting them," Julian stammered.

"Is it not true, Mr. Vance," Eleanor continued, pulling a document from the folder, "that on June 14th of last year, while Miles was undergoing a routine tonsillectomy, you were registered at a luxury casino in Monte Carlo, spending £150,000 in a single evening?"

Julian’s face went bright red. "That has nothing to do with my love for my son!"

"And is it not true," Eleanor raised her voice, her eyes sweeping over the judicial bench, "that your current petition for custody was filed exactly forty-eight hours after the Saudi investment group made a cohabiting male heir a non-negotiable prerequisite for your £3 billion corporate payout?"
