Chapter 13 - Storm Clouds over Oxfordshire

Before we could even pack our bags for London, the attack escalated from legal maneuvers to psychological warfare.
It started at noon. Miles was playing in the orchard with our golden retriever, Barnaby, while Thomas and I finalized documents with Eleanor inside. Suddenly, Barnaby began barking furiously near the perimeter wall.
Thomas sprinted outside, and I followed right on his heels.
Positioned along the public bridleway bordering our property were three black vans equipped with high-powered telephoto lenses and parabolic microphones. Paparazzi and private investigators hired by the Vance family were already besieging our sanctuary. Flashbulbs burst through the leaves of the ancient oak trees.
"Miles! Inside, now!" I screamed, rushing forward to shield my son with my body.
"Hey! Look over here, Claire!" a voice shouted from the tree line. "Is it true you stole the Vance heir? How much did you blackmail Julian for?"
Miles cowered against my waist, his little hands clutching the soft white cotton of my dress, his body trembling with sudden fear. The pure, unburdened joy he had displayed just yesterday was instantly replaced by confusion and terror.
"Mommy... who are those bad men? Why are they taking pictures of us?" Miles whimpered, his eyes filling with big, hot tears.
"They're nobody, baby. Look at me, look at Mommy," I choked back my own rage, lifting him into my arms and rushing toward the house.
Thomas didn't pull back. He marched straight to the edge of our fence line, his posture imposing and lethal. "You are on private property!" Thomas roared at the photographers. "Turn those cameras off or I will personally ensure your press credentials and equipment are destroyed by nightfall!"
A slick man in an expensive suit stepped out from behind the lead van. It was Marcus Sterling, Richard Vance’s personal fixer and chief of security.
"Always a pleasure, Mr. Hale," Sterling smirked, adjusting his sunglasses. "We're just doing our job. Mr. Vance simply wants to see his grandson. Why are you hiding the boy? What are you trying to conceal out here in the woods?"

"Get off my land, Sterling," Thomas said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "Tell Richard that if he wants a war, he just got one."
"Oh, it's not a war, Thomas," Sterling sneered. "It's a reclamation."
