Chapter 29 - Promises in the Snow

On Christmas Eve, a deep quiet blanketed the countryside. Arthur and Chloe—who had dedicated the past several months to community service and rebuilding her life in a quiet seaside village—had sent a heartfelt letter of gratitude and peace, wishing us well. Our home was filled with the rich scents of roasting pine, cinnamon, and hot mulled cider.

After Miles had fallen fast asleep, his head full of dreams of Santa Claus and wooden sleds, Thomas took my hand and led me out onto the back porch.

The snow lay undisturbed across the lawn, glittering under the bright light of a full winter moon. The ancient oak trees stood tall and majestic, their snow-laden branches creating a natural cathedral over our yard.

Thomas reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, simple wooden box he had crafted himself. He opened it to reveal a classic silver ring, set with a modest, brilliantly cut sapphire that mirrored the deep blue of the winter night sky.

"Claire," Thomas spoke, his voice rich with deep, grounded emotion as he took my left hand in his. "We built this kingdom together through fire, courts, and storms. You gave me a family, you gave me a son, and you showed me what true courage looks like. I don't need high society, and I don't need grand titles. I just want to spend every sunrise and sunset of my life right here, protecting you and loving you."

Tears of absolute joy welled in my eyes, freezing softly against my warm cheeks.

"Yes," I whispered, my voice brimming with profound certainty. "A thousand times yes, Thomas."

He slid the ring onto my finger and pulled me into his arms, pressing his lips against mine in a long, sweet, tender kiss that erased every lingering memory of pain I had ever known.
