Chapter 16 - Betrayal & Stakes

The preliminary hearing before Justice Henderson was brutal.
Julian’s lead counsel presented a masterfully constructed web of lies. They painted me as an emotionally unstable mother who had isolated Miles in the countryside, depriving him of elite medical care and world-class education. They produced sworn affidavits from former staff members—people I had once trusted—claiming I had suffered severe postpartum psychosis and had threatened to take Miles out of the country.
I sat at the defense table, my knuckles white as I gripped Eleanor Thorne's arm. The betrayal cut deep; Richard Vance had paid off my former housekeeper and driver to testify against me.
"Your Honor," Eleanor countered, her voice ringing clear throughout the lofty courtroom. "The defense submits that this entire petition is a fraudulent attempt by Vance Global to secure a regulatory compliance certificate for a three-billion-pound corporate merger. We have attached certified medical records from the NHS and top pediatric specialists in Oxfordshire demonstrating that Miles Hale is in peak physical and psychological health."
Justice Henderson adjusted his spectacles, looking over the documents. "These are serious allegations on both sides. Given the high profile of the family and the conflicting claims regarding the child's psychological welfare, I am ordering a court-appointed child guardian to inspect both residences—the Vance estate in Kensington and the cottage in Oxfordshire—before issuing a final ruling in four days."
It was a temporary stay of execution, but as we left the courtroom, a devastating blow struck from an unexpected direction.
While Thomas was on the phone with his intelligence team in the corridor, Chloe—Arthur’s partner who had attended our Sunday lunch—approached me near the marble pillars, looking pale and nervous.
"Claire... I need to talk to you," Chloe whispered, her hands shaking as she pulled me into a quiet alcove.
"Chloe, what's wrong?" I asked, instantly concerned.
May you like
"I... I made a terrible mistake," Chloe choked out, tears streaming down her face. "Three months ago, my brother’s logistics company was facing bankruptcy. Marcus Sterling approached him. They offered to pay off all his debts if... if I kept them updated on where you and Thomas were living and what you were doing. I didn't know they were going to do this! I thought they just wanted to send child support payments!"
My heart plunged into a cold abyss. Chloe. The woman I had welcomed into my home, the woman who had laughed at my table and eaten summer berry cobbler with my son just forty-eight hours ago, had been Richard Vance’s informant.
