Chapter 6 - The New Treaty

The aftermath of the battle at the docks was swift and decisive.
By the next morning, the Marcone family’s influence in New York was effectively wiped out. Their territories were absorbed into Costa Enterprises, their captains sworn to Gabriel, and Richard Marcone was forced into a permanent, highly monitored "retirement" in Florida.
Dominic Vance was handed over to the federal authorities on drug trafficking charges, ensuring he would spend the next thirty years behind bars, far away from Clara and her child.
In the master office of Costa Enterprises, the atmosphere was quiet.
Norah stood by the desk, looking at the quarterly projections. Her sister was currently resting in a private, high-security wing of a hospital paid for by Gabriel, surrounded by the best doctors in the city.
Gabriel entered, wearing a fresh gray suit. He looked tired, but his eyes were calm as he saw her.
"How is Clara?" he asked, sitting behind his desk.
"She’s doing well," Norah said, her voice soft and full of emotion. "The doctors say the baby is healthy. She’s... she’s safe, Gabriel. For the first time in a year, she slept through the night without waking up screaming."
"Good," Gabriel said, taking a sip of his coffee.
Norah walked around the desk, standing beside him. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper, placing it on the desk.
"What is this?" Gabriel asked.
"My formal resignation," Norah said.
Gabriel’s hand stopped on his cup. He looked up at her, his eyes dark and intense. "Why?"
"Because I cannot work for you anymore, Gabriel," she said honestly. "Not because I don't respect you. But because I... I cannot pretend that this is just a professional relationship. You saved my family. You destroyed an entire empire to keep me safe. I cannot look at you as just my boss anymore."
Gabriel stood up, his towering frame casting a shadow over her. He didn't touch her, but the proximity was intense, the air between them thick with unspoken feelings.
"And who do you want to look at me as, Norah?" he asked, his voice dropping to a low, husky register.
"A man," she whispered. "A man who is far too dangerous for me, but... a man I cannot stop thinking about."
Gabriel reached out, his large hand gently cupping her jaw. His thumb brushed over her cheek, his touch surprisingly soft for a man who had ordered the destruction of a syndicate only hours earlier.
"I told you once, Norah, that I don't let my assets go," he said, his eyes locking onto hers. "But you aren't an asset. You are the only person in this city who sees me for what I truly am and isn't afraid. I am not going to accept your resignation. But I am going to offer you a partnership."
"A partnership?" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Costa Enterprises is changing," Gabriel said. "I am going to clean the money. We are going fully legitimate. No more docks, no more tariffs, no more wars. I am going to build a logistics empire that your sister’s child can be proud to grow up near. And I want you to run it with me. Not as my secretary. As my partner. In the office, and in my life."
Norah looked at him, searching his dark eyes for any trace of the monster she had feared, but finding only a deep, protective devotion.

"It will take a lot of work to clean this empire, Gabriel," she said, a small, genuine smile finally touching her lips.
"Then we had better start early," he replied, before leaning down and pressing his lips to hers in a deep, long-awaited kiss that tasted of rain, coffee, and a new beginning.
