Chapter 7 - The Cleaning of the Slate

The transition of an empire from illicit syndicate to clean corporate giant was not a simple task.
For the next three months, the offices of Costa Enterprises looked less like a corporate headquarters and more like a war room. Accountants, forensic investigators, and corporate lawyers—all thoroughly vetted and sworn to absolute discretion—worked twenty-four hours a day to untangle the web of shell companies, offshore accounts, and cash-based businesses that had funded the Costa family for generations.
Norah was at the center of it all.
She sat at the head of the massive conference table, her blonde hair pinned up, her glasses resting on the bridge of her nose as she reviewed a stack of balance sheets. Gabriel sat beside her, his sleeves rolled up, listening as she explained the restructuring.
"The shipping lines are our most valuable legitimate asset," Norah said, pointing to a digital map of the eastern seaboard on the screen. "If we sever all ties with the local unions that were under your father’s control and sign a fair, transparent contract with the national transport union, we can boost our shipping volume by forty percent. The margins will be lower initially, but the stability will attract major corporate clients like retail giants and pharmaceutical distributors."
"And the cash accounts?" Gabriel asked, his hand resting on the back of her chair, his fingers occasionally brushing her shoulder.
"We transfer them into a legitimate venture capital fund," she explained. "We invest in local businesses, green energy, and infrastructure in the outer boroughs. It cleans the capital, generates steady returns, and builds goodwill with the city council. By the time the state regulators finish their annual audit, Costa Enterprises will be as clean as a whistle."
The lawyers and accountants nodded in agreement, clearly impressed by her strategic mind. Gabriel watched her, a deep, quiet pride warming his chest. She was not just managing his schedule anymore; she was rebuilding his world from the ground up.
As the team filed out of the room, leaving them alone in the quiet conference hall, Gabriel pulled her into his lap. Norah laughed, her arms wrapping around his neck.
"Mr. Costa," she teased, "we are in a professional environment."
"The doors are locked, Miss Hayes," he murmured, his face burying in the crook of her neck. "And I am the boss. Or at least, I pretend to be. We both know you run this place."
"I only run the logistics," she whispered, her fingers playing with the collar of his shirt. "You run the heart."
He looked up at her, his eyes filled with a softness that would have shocked his former rivals. "Clara is moving into her new house in Queens tomorrow. Marcus has already set up the security system."
"Thank you, Gabriel," Norah said, her eyes shining with gratitude. "She... she called me yesterday. She’s so excited about the nursery. She wants to name the baby after you if it’s a boy."

Gabriel let out a short, surprised laugh. "A little Gabriel running around? New York isn't ready for that."
"I think the world is ready for a different kind of Gabriel," she said softly, kissing his cheek. "The one who builds instead of destroys."
