Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

Despite their progress, the transition of a mafia empire was never entirely bloodless.

While the Marcone family had been dismantled, some of their former associates were not pleased with Gabriel’s decision to go legitimate. The elimination of illegal tariffs and drug smuggling routes had cut off the income streams of several high-ranking captains who had grown rich on the old system.

One evening, as Gabriel and Norah were leaving the Tribeca loft to go to a dinner with several city council members, Marcus’s radio crackled to life.

"Boss," the voice of the lead security detail gasped, static cutting through the speaker. "We’ve got... we’ve got movement on the fire escape. They’ve bypassed the perimeter—"

A loud explosion rocked the lower level of the building, the sound of shattering glass and gunfire echoing up the elevator shaft.

Gabriel’s protective instincts flared instantly. He grabbed Norah, shoving her behind him as he drew his custom silver pistol from his holster.

"Marcus!" Gabriel roared. "Get her to the safe room!"

"No, Gabriel!" Norah cried, holding onto his sleeve. "I’m not leaving you!"

"Go, Norah!" he commanded, his eyes wild with a fierce, protective light. "I cannot fight them if I am worried about you. Trust me."

Marcus grabbed Norah’s arm, guiding her toward the hidden steel door behind the living room bookshelf. "This way, Miss Hayes! Hurry!"

As the steel door clicked shut, sealing Norah inside the secure, concrete room, she could hear the heavy thud of footsteps in the living room and the rapid fire of automatic weapons.

Outside, Gabriel stood behind the marble kitchen island, firing with cold, lethal precision. Three armed men in tactical gear burst through the glass doors, their weapons spitting fire.

Gabriel fired twice, both shots finding their marks, dropping the first two men instantly. The third man lunged over the counter, his knife flashing in the dim light. Gabriel blocked the strike, his forearm colliding with the man’s wrist. They tumbled to the floor, struggling for control of the blade.

The man was younger, stronger, his eyes filled with a desperate, vengeful rage. "You ruined us, Costa! You took our livelihood for some blonde whore!"

Gabriel’s grip tightened, his muscles straining as he slowly turned the knife back toward the attacker's throat. "You should have stayed in the shadows," Gabriel growled.

With a final, powerful thrust, the struggle was over. The man collapsed onto the floor, silent.

Gabriel stood up, his breathing heavy, his shirt torn and stained with blood. He looked around the ruined living room. The glass windows were shattered, the leather sofas peppered with bullet holes, the air thick with the smell of gunpowder.

"Marcus!" Gabriel called out, his voice hoarse.

"I’m here, Boss," Marcus said, stepping out of the hallway, his shoulder bleeding from a graze wound but his weapon still raised. "The building is secure. The rest of them are dead or running."

Gabriel didn't wait. He rushed to the bookshelf, entering the security code. The heavy steel door slid open, and Norah flew into his arms, holding him so tightly he could barely breathe.

"You're bleeding," she sobbed, her hands hovering over his torn shirt.

"It’s not mine," he said, holding her face in his hands, his thumbs wiping away her tears. "I’m fine, Norah. I’m fine."

She looked at the ruined apartment, her face pale but her eyes filled with a strange, hard resolve.

"They tried to take our safety again," she whispered.

"They failed," Gabriel said. "And they will never try again. I am going to ensure that this is the very last time a gun is fired in my presence."
