Chapter 9 - The Final Settlement

The counter-strike was not carried out with weapons, but with the cold, unyielding weight of the law and financial ruin.
Using the financial records he had gathered during the audit, Gabriel leaked a massive, encrypted file to the federal authorities and the District Attorney’s office. The file contained the complete, detailed transaction records of every remaining corrupt captain, politician, and union boss who had tried to block the transition of Costa Enterprises.
By the next morning, the FBI had launched a coordinated raid across three states, arresting forty-two high-ranking organized crime figures. The remaining remnants of the Marcone and old Costa factions were dismantled by the justice system, leaving Gabriel’s legitimate empire as the only survivor.
"It’s done," Norah said, entering Gabriel’s office with a fresh cup of coffee. "The DA just announced the indictments. The city is clean, Gabriel. The old world is completely gone."
Gabriel stood by the window, looking out at the Hudson River. The morning sun was rising, casting a warm, golden light over the water, replacing the cold gray mist that had hung over his life for so long.
He turned to her, a soft smile touching his lips. He walked over, taking her hands in his.
"Then it’s time to start the new one," he said.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing a stunning, flawless emerald ring surrounded by delicate diamonds—a ring that was elegant, classic, and completely devoid of the gaudy showiness of his old life.
"Norah Hayes," Gabriel said, his voice thick with emotion. "You found me in a dark world, and you showed me that there is a different way to live. You managed my empire, you saved my heart, and you made me a man I can be proud of. Will you marry me?"
