Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Harvest

The afternoon sun was sinking behind the western crest of the Michigan apple orchard, painting the sky in deep shades of rose, amber, and indigo. The long wooden table on the lawn was scattered with crumbs of artisan bread and empty wine glasses, echoes of a peaceful afternoon spent with trusted corporate colleagues.
Luca stood near the edge of the terrace, cradling three-year-old Lena against his chest as she succumbed to exhaustion, her dark curls resting heavily against his shoulder. A few feet away, Ash was sitting on the grass, carefully untangling the string of his red kite with Marco’s patient assistance.
Sarah walked up behind Luca, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her forehead against his back. She felt the steady, reassuring rise and fall of his chest.
"They're exhausted," Sarah whispered softly, her hands gently touching the slight, warm swell of her waist where their third child rested.
"It's a good kind of tired," Luca murmured, turning slightly to wrap his free arm around Sarah, pulling her close. His amber eyes swept over the quiet orchard, but his posture—honed by years of surviving the brutal underworld—remained subtly vigilant.
"You're scanning the treeline, Luca," Sarah noted gently, looking up at his sharp jawline. "We're two hundred miles from Chicago. The syndicate was liquidated. The court settlements were finalized six months ago."
"Habit," Luca replied softly, kissing the crown of her head. "When you spend a decade waiting for a bullet, peace feels like a trick of the light."
A sharp, metallic chime echoed from the mahogany desk in the glass-walled study overlooking the terrace. It was the private, encrypted satellite line—a phone line known only to Marco, Luca, and Agent Sarah Vance’s federal task force.
Marco stood up from the grass, handing the kite string to Ash. His easy, laughing expression instantly evaporated, replaced by the stoic, formidable presence of a man who had once ruled Chicago’s logistics empire.
"Stay with the kids," Marco said quietly to Luca, stepping past them toward the study.
Sarah met Luca's eyes. The warm summer air suddenly felt cooler. She followed Marco into the study, her heart beating a little faster against her ribs.
Inside, Marco hit the speaker button on the encrypted receiver. Agent Vance's voice filled the room, crisp, direct, and stripped of pleasantries.
"Marco. Sarah. I hope you're sitting down."
"We're listening, Sarah," Marco said, leaning against the edge of the mahogany desk. "What happened?"
"Three hours ago, a high-security transport vehicle traveling from the federal correctional facility in Terre Haute was ambushed," Vance revealed, her voice heavy with tension. "Two armed vehicles rammed the transport off Interstate 65. The guards were neutralized with military-grade stun charges."
Sarah felt a sudden chill run down her spine. "Who was in that transport, Vance?"
"Viktor Moretti," Vance stated plainly.
The name hung in the air like a poisoned cloud. Viktor Moretti—Luca’s estranged uncle, the ruthless patriarch who had orchestrated the dark syndicate operations that had nearly destroyed their lives three years ago. Viktor had been serving a thirty-year sentence without parole.
"Viktor is sixty-five years old and broke," Marco said, his jaw tightening. "He doesn't have the resources or the loyalty left in Chicago to pull off a federal highway ambush."
"He doesn't," Vance agreed. "But his daughter does. Julianna Moretti just landed at a private airfield in Gary, Indiana, on a charter flight from Zurich. She’s liquidated twenty million dollars in offshore assets over the past forty-eight hours."
Sarah turned to look through the floor-to-ceiling glass window of the study. Outside, Luca was kneeling on the grass, laughing as Ash tried to climb onto his back while holding Lena. The picture of absolute domestic peace was suddenly framed by a nightmare from the past.
"Julianna didn't break her father out to save him," Sarah realized, her mind connecting the pieces instantly. "She broke him out because Viktor knows the location of the old family ledgers—the ones that list every hidden asset and proxy holding across the Midwest."
"And because she wants blood," Marco added coldly. "Julianna blamed Luca for the fall of the Moretti name. She views your legitimacy as a personal theft."
"My field teams are setting up perimeters around your old Chicago properties," Vance warned. "But Julianna isn't stupid. She knows you moved to Michigan. I'm dispatching a federal security detail to your estate within two hours."
"No," Marco said firmly, his voice dropping into the authoritative register that had once commanded respect across two states. "If federal agents surround this orchard, Julianna will know we're expecting her. She'll slip into the shadows and wait months—years—until we let our guard down. We don't live in fear anymore, Vance."

"What are you proposing, Marco?" Vance asked.
"Let her come to Michigan," Marco replied, his gray eyes flashing with cold, calculated resolve. "We set the terms of the engagement. And this time, we finish the Moretti legacy permanently."
