Chapter 3 - The Web of Deceit

I unhooked the security chain. The heavy wooden door swung open fully, and for the first time in more than a thousand days, there was nothing separating me from the husband I had grieved, hated, and loved.
Luca didn't step forward immediately. He waited for my unspoken permission, a level of deference he had never shown to anyone in his entire life. I stepped back into the dimly lit living room, and he followed, closing the door softly behind him.
"If what you're saying is true," I started, my hands trembling so badly I had to tuck them into my apron pockets, "why didn't you find me sooner? You have resources. You have an army."
"Because Vanessa played a double game," Luca explained, his eyes scanning the modest apartment, lingering on the small plastic toys scattered near the sofa. "She didn't just stage the betrayal. She left a fake trail of breadcrumbs. She made it look like you had fled to Europe with an old college acquaintance. I spent the first year tearing apart safe houses in France and Italy, losing my mind, burning millions to find a ghost. It wasn't until six months ago, when Marco—my underboss—interrogated one of Vanessa’s private associates, that we discovered she had been paying an offshore digital firm to spoof your passport data across European borders."
The sheer scale of the manipulation made my stomach turn. My own flesh and blood. My younger sister, whom I had protected from our abusive father, whom I had brought into my home out of pure love.
"Where is she?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Where is Vanessa?"
Luca’s expression darkened, the cold, lethal mafia don returning for a split second. "She is locked away in a private sanitarium in upstate New York under a pseudonym. She will never see the sun again, Sarah. She will never wear fine silk, and she will never touch a single cent of the Moretti fortune. I didn't kill her only because she is your sister, and I knew... I hoped... that if I ever found you, I would need her alive to confess the truth to your face."
He took a slow step toward me, his eyes dropping to the floor. "But I didn't know about them. I swear to you, Sarah, if I had known you were carrying my children, I would have burned the entire North American continent to the ground to locate you."

"That's exactly why I didn't tell you," I whispered, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "Look at this place, Luca. It's quiet. Nobody gets shot here. Nobody has to check under their car for pipe bombs before taking their kids to the park. I didn't want my babies raised in a fortress surrounded by men with submachine guns."
"They don't have to be," Luca said, his voice cracking with immense emotion. He dropped to his knees right there on my cheap linoleum floor, looking up at me with absolute submission. "I will walk away from it all. I will give the outfit to Marco. I will buy a house down the road. I will clean floors, bake bread, do whatever it takes. Just don't make me leave them. Don't make me leave you."
