Chapter 14 - The Poisoned Apple

Despite the digital blockade, the days stretched on with agonizing tension. The July sun continued to bake the Michigan orchard, but no one walked through the trees. The harvest was ready, the apples heavy on the branches, but the workers had been sent home for their own safety.

One afternoon, a delivery truck pulled up to the outer checkpoint. The driver, a local man who had worked with the Morettis for years, delivered a routine shipment of farming fertilizers and soil nutrients that had been ordered weeks ago.

The federal guards inspected the truck, checked the driver's ID, and allowed him to drop the pallets at the main barn before exiting.

An hour later, Luca walked down to the barn to check the inventory. He was accompanied by two armed agents. As he sliced open one of the fertilizer bags to inspect the contents, his eyes caught a strange, synthetic odor—sharp, sweet, and entirely chemical.

"Get out! Everyone get out now!" Luca roared, grabbing the nearest agent and throwing him through the barn doors.

A split second later, a brilliant blue chemical flash erupted from the center of the pallets. It wasn't a fragmentation bomb; it was a localized incendiary device designed to ignite agricultural chemicals. Within seconds, the historic barn was engulfed in a ferocious, toxic fire, the black smoke billowing high into the clear blue Michigan sky.

Sarah ran out onto the terrace, watching the smoke rise from the edge of the orchard. She screamed Luca's name, her heart stopping as she saw the roof of the barn collapse in a shower of sparks.

Through the haze of the black smoke, Luca emerged, coughing violently, his shirt scorched, supporting one of the federal agents who had been injured by the blast wave. He was alive, but the message was clear: Victor’s reach had penetrated their physical sanctuary.
