Chapter 5 - The Language of Silence

Luca froze mid-stride, an incredibly vulnerable expression crossing his face before he managed to smooth it into a gentle smile. He walked over to their low table, carefully lowering his massive frame into one of the tiny wooden chairs meant for children.

"I'm not a giant," Luca said softly, his voice dropping into a register I had never heard him use before—tender, light, and full of wonder. "My name is Luca."

Lena giggled, leaning across the table to inspect his face. "You have my eyes. Ash, look! He has your eyes too!"

Ash didn't look up immediately. He continued to meticulously color a drawing of a tractor, his small fingers holding the crayon with intense concentration. Luca didn't push him. He simply sat patiently, watching his son with a reverence that brought a lump to my throat.

After a few minutes, Ash stopped coloring. He picked up a bright red crayon, extended his small arm, and offered it to Luca. He didn't say a word, but the gesture was monumental. Ash didn't share with anyone except his sister.

Luca’s hand shook slightly as he took the crayon. "Thank you, buddy. Should I color the wheels?"

Ash gave a single, solemn nod.

I watched from behind the counter, tears pricking my eyes. For the past three years, I had convinced myself that I was enough for them—and I was—but seeing the missing puzzle piece slide into place so effortlessly was both beautiful and terrifying.

By noon, the bakery had cleared out, and Mr. Pike, the elderly owner who had become a surrogate grandfather to me, gave me a knowing wink and told me to take the afternoon off.

We walked to the local park, a small patch of green nestled against the Appalachian hills. The twins ran ahead toward the swings, while Luca and I walked a few paces behind, maintaining a deliberate distance.

"They are magnificent, Sarah," Luca murmured, his eyes never leaving the children. "You did this all on your own. In a small apartment, working dawn to dusk. You are the strongest woman I've ever known."

"I did what I had to do to keep them safe," I replied, looking up at the gray sky. "But the world you live in... it doesn't just disappear because you want it to, Luca. What happens when your enemies find out you're here?"

Luca’s jaw clenched. "They won't. I've spent the last six months systematically dismantling any internal threats. The outfit is completely legitimized under corporate holding companies now. But if anyone ever tries to bring that filth near my family... I will remind them why they feared the Moretti name in the first place."
