Chapter 2 - The Shadow at the Window

The rain didn't stop. By evening, the quiet streets of Gray Hollow were entirely deserted, save for the solitary black vehicle that had become a permanent fixture outside my home. The twins had finally fallen asleep, tucked beneath their quilted blankets, snoring softly in the small bedroom we shared.

I sat in the dark living room, a cold cup of chamomile tea resting between my hands, staring at the front door. I knew he was going to come back. Luca was a man who commanded empires; he wouldn't sit in a car forever.

As if on cue, three soft, deliberate knocks rattled the wood. Not the aggressive pounding of a mafia boss demanding entry, but a hesitant, almost pleading rhythm.

I walked over, unlocked the deadbolt with a loud click, and pulled the door open just a crack, keeping the security chain engaged.

Luca stood there. He had discarded his heavy black trench coat. He was just in a dark, damp cashmere sweater, his jaw covered in a thick layer of dark stubble. The sharp, aristocratic lines of his face were gaunt, his eyes bloodshot. Up close, the raw agony radiating from him was palpable.

"Sarah," he said, his voice a cracked whisper that tore at the scabs of my old wounds. "Please. Just five minutes. I don't want to fight. I just... I need to understand."

"There is nothing to understand, Luca," I said, my tone as flat and unyielding as granite. "You stayed in Chicago with your chosen life. I left. End of story."

"You think I chose her?" Luca’s voice cracked, a desperate, frantic edge breaking through his usual iron control. He stepped closer, pressing his palm against the door. "Sarah, look at me. Look into my eyes. Do you honestly believe I could ever touch your sister? Do you honestly think I would ever let another woman into our bed?"

I let out a sharp, bitter laugh that felt like glass in my throat. "I don't have to believe anything, Luca. I heard her. I saw the silhouette. I saw her in our bed, wearing the jewelry you bought her, laughing in the dark. Don't come here three years later and try to gaslight me into believing I'm crazy."

"I was drugged, Sarah!"

The words left his mouth like a bullet. He shook his head, a single tear escaping his amber eyes, cutting through the dampness on his cheek. "That night... the gala... I went upstairs because my drink tasted off. I passed out cold on the sofa in the adjoining dressing room. I didn't wake up until five in the morning, alone, with a headache that felt like a localized explosion. When I came out, you were gone. Your clothes were gone. And Vanessa was sitting downstairs in the kitchen, crying, claiming that you had seen us together and misconstrued everything."

I stared at him through the crack in the door, my breath catching. My mind raced back to that night—the shadows, the fact that I hadn't actually seen the man’s face clearly, only the familiar shape.

"You're lying," I whispered, though a terrifying, insidious doubt began to bloom in the corners of my mind. "Vanessa loved me. She wouldn't..."

"Vanessa wanted everything you had," Luca said fiercely. "The moment you disappeared, she tried to step into your place. She tried to console me, tried to crawl into my bed. Within a week, I had my security team pull the forensic data from the estate's private kitchen. She had slipped a high-dose veterinary sedative into my glass at the bar. She staged the entire thing, Sarah. She wanted you to find her. She wanted you to run."
