Chapter 8 - The Gift of Grace

Winter descended upon the Michigan valley in late December, blanketing the orchard in a pristine layer of soft, shimmering white snow. The apple trees stood like quiet silver statues under the pale winter sun, their branches dusting the quiet grounds with crystalline beauty.

The estate house was filled with the warm, rich fragrance of roasting turkey, pine garlands, and fresh-baked cinnamon tarts. Roaring fires crackled in every stone hearth, casting a golden glow across the wide, modern rooms.

It was Christmas Eve.

In the grand living room, a massive pine tree stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, decorated with hand-crafted wooden ornaments and twinkling silver lights.

Five-year-old Lena and six-year-old Ash were sitting on the plush rug near the hearth, carefully unwrapping wooden toys that Marco had spent weeks hand-carving in his workshop—a detailed train for Ash and a miniature wooden rocking horse for Lena.

Luca sat on the large velvet sofa, holding a tiny bundle wrapped in a soft cream blanket.

Three weeks ago, Sarah had given birth to their third child—a healthy, beautiful baby girl with a mop of soft dark hair and bright, intelligent dark eyes.

They had named her Grace—Grace Elena Moretti.

Sarah sat beside Luca on the sofa, leaning her head against his broad shoulder, her arm wrapped comfortably around his waist. She wore a soft knit sweater, her face glowing with pure contentment and health.

"Look at her, Luca," Sarah whispered, touching the baby’s tiny, soft cheek with her finger. "She’s so calm."

Luca looked down at his newborn daughter, his eyes overflowing with an intensity of love that made his breath catch. He held the tiny child with exquisite care, his large, powerful hands supporting her fragile frame as if she were the most precious treasure in the universe.

"Grace," Luca murmured softly, his voice thick with emotion. "Because after all the darkness, after all the blood and fire... we were given grace."

Marco walked into the living room, holding two glasses of mulled wine. He set one down for Sarah and handed the other to Luca, before sitting down on the rug near the fireplace to help Ash build a wooden train track.

"She has your chin, Luca," Marco observed with a warm grin, looking up at the baby. "Poor girl."

Luca let out a rich, deep laugh—a sound that echoed warmly through the sunlit room. "She'll be tough enough to handle it, Marco."

Lena scrambled up from the rug, climbing carefully onto the sofa beside Sarah, peeking over the edge of the blanket at her baby sister.

"Can I hold her hand, Mommy?" Lena whispered softly.

"Of course you can, sweetheart," Sarah smiled gently, guiding Lena’s tiny fingers to touch baby Grace's palm. The newborn baby’s tiny hand opened, her little fingers instantly curling firmly around Lena’s thumb.

Lena gasped in pure delight, looking up at Luca with wide, shining eyes. "She likes me, Daddy!"

"She loves you, Lena," Luca murmured, wrapping his free arm around Lena, pulling her close against his side. "She's very lucky to have a big sister like you."

Sitting together by the crackling fire as snow fell gently outside the window, the five of them formed an unbroken circle of warmth, security, and everlasting peace.
