Chapter 2 - The Fortress in the Blossoms

By midnight, the serene atmosphere of the Michigan estate had transformed into a fortress of quiet, high-tech security.

Inside the primary estate house, the lights were dimmed to a soft amber glow. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows were reinforced with automated steel blast shutters hidden within the architectural wood paneling. In the subterranean nursery, Lena and Ash were fast asleep, guarded by two trusted corporate security specialists whom Luca had personally vetted during his transition to legitimate logistics.

In the central library, a tactical map of the three-hundred-acre estate was projected onto a digital display screen.

Luca stood before the screen, wearing dark tactical trousers and a fitted black shirt. The broken, exhausted man Sarah had nursed back to life was completely gone; in his place stood the brilliant, formidable strategist who had once protected an empire.

"Julianna won't attack the house directly with heavy weapons," Luca analyzed, his finger tracing the perimeter line of the apple orchard on the digital map. "She knows we have satellite coverage and automated perimeter alarms. Her strength lies in deception."

Marco leaned against the mahogany table, reviewing a file of aerial photos. "She’ll use Viktor as leverage or bait. Viktor knows my psychological profile. He knows I won't run if he threatens the supply hubs."

Sarah walked into the room, holding two cups of warm tea. She wore comfortable wool clothing, her posture steady despite her growing pregnancy. She set a cup down beside Marco and handed the other to Luca.

"She isn't coming for the supply hubs, Marco," Sarah said softly, placing her hand over Luca's arm. "She's coming for the orchard. Julianna wants to destroy the one thing Viktor could never build: a real home."

Luca looked down at Sarah, his amber eyes softening as he reached out to gently touch her cheek. "I brought this shadow to your doorstep, Sarah. I swore on our wedding day that you would only ever see the light."

"We built this life together, Luca," Sarah replied, her voice firm and unwavering, her hand grasping his. "The shadow isn't yours—it's a ghost trying to drag us back into a grave we already escaped. We fight together."

Marco looked between his brother and Sarah, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. "She's right, Luca. We aren't the Outfit anymore. We don't hide in backrooms, and we don't fight dirty for pride. We protect our family."

The digital map suddenly flashed red along the southern boundary of the estate—the section where the old wooden barn bordered the county road.

"Perimeter breach," Marco said, his tone instantly shifting. "Motion sensors triggered at Gate Three."

Luca accessed the feed from a thermal camera hidden in the orchard trees. Two dark figures had slipped through the boundary fence, moving with disciplined, tactical speed through the rows of blooming apple trees. Behind them, a heavily modified silver sedan sat parked on the shoulder of the road, its lights blacked out.

"It’s not a full strike team," Luca observed, his eyes narrowing as he zoomed in on the lead heat signature. "It’s a scout unit. They’re placing signal-jamming devices along the fence line to blind our internal security mesh."

"They want to isolate the house before Julianna brings the main team in," Sarah said, her mind working rapidly. "If they trip the jammers, our federal link to Vance goes dead."

Luca reached into a drawer beneath the desk, pulling out a sleek, compact sidearm and checking the chamber with practiced grace. "Not if I cut the scout unit off first."

"Luca, wait," Sarah said, stepping in front of him. "No solo runs. We use the estate's automated containment grid."

Luca looked into Sarah's eyes, seeing the quiet, fierce intelligence that had captivated him from the moment they met. He nodded slowly. "Containment Grid Alpha. We trap them in the processing shed before they reach the central lawn."

"I'll coordinate the lock systems from the study," Marco said, pulling up the master control panel on his tablet. "Let's show Julianna Moretti what happens when she steps onto our land."
